Outrage over Filner accusations from military assault victims

A CNN report that San Diego Mayor Bob Filner used a women's veterans group "for his own personal agenda" by making unwanted advances to seven or eight women caused a firestorm on social media Wednesday morning with one of the mayor's most prominent former supporters telling him to "resign, then stay in rehab forever."

Many of the women were victims of sexual assault when they were in the military.

According to CNN, Tara Jones, the president of the group, said she's spoken to seven to eight women who had varying encounters with Filner at the women's veteran events, from groping to unwanted requests for dates. "He went to dinners, asked women out to dinners, grabbed breasts, buttocks. The full gamut. Everything that is complete violation of what we stand for," Jones said. "He's a sexual predator. And he used this organization for his own personal agenda."

Beyond the instantly emotional responses you'll find below that the story generated on Twitter, it led to a pointed Facebook discussion about the divide between "human decency" and "asking someone for a date." Click the link in this paragraph to read the entire conversation; the tweets will be here when you return. Or read on for a snapshot.

Sara Kent: ...[T]his story, taken in its entirety, exemplifies how Bob is able to speak eloquently and appropriately in public while hurting women in private.

David McCullough: Sara - asking someone for a date is not abuse.

Marco Gonzalez: I disagree. Asking out an extremely vulnerable woman, when you know her to be so and when you are in a position of overwhelming power, is absolutely a form of predatory abuse. That you don't immediately grasp that, David, is telling of your utterly blind faith and allegiance.

David McCullough: Marco - so we shun victims of abuse - like they do in certain countries. Maybe even arrest them for sex outside of marriage - like in Saudi. ? Marco - have you ever hugged someone in your professional life? Did you ask permission before hand or did you commit assault?

Marco Gonzalez: David, you've made my point for me. ... No David, I think it's disgusting that an elected official (and his supporters) would not recognize this as an abuse of power, a lack of decorum, and a violation of the community standards we expect of decent human beings.

David McCullough: So you are saying rape victims should be shunned - never asked out on a date.

Outrage builds with latest Filner accusations

Filner headlock? Filner dance? We now have the Filner voice mail. Reaction was swift to the report that Filner's newest accusers were military veterans and victims of sexual assault. The former mayor of Encinitas even chimed in. The jokes piled up, too. Political points were made. And this point. People used phrases like "go for the jugular" to talk about the mayor. Journalists weighed in. On the heels of former journalists. And all around the country, people spoke up. In Los Angeles... Montana... Pennsylvania... And New York.

Anti-Executable 5.0

A traditional signature-based antivirus utility checks files against a database of malware signatures. Behavior-based monitors detect malware by looking for signs of malicious activity. Anti-Executable 5.0 ($45, direct) takes a much simpler approach. Any program that's not on the list of permitted applications just can't run, period. Version 5.0 streamlines the user experience a bit, but it still has a few quirks.

Think of your antivirus utility as the doorman at a fancy nightclub. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus (2014) includes traditional signature-based detection; that's like a doorman with a list of undesirables who are banned from the club. The behavior-based SONAR detection built into Norton AntiVirus (2013) is like a doorman who sizes up the crowd and only lets in well-behaved patrons. As for Anti-Executable, it's the guy who just growls, "You're not on the list!"

In addition to the Standard edition reviewed here, Faronics offers a version specifically tuned for use on servers. There's also a centrally managed version designed for Enterprises. But at the core of all three is the same "default deny" technology.

Getting Started
The download package for Anti-Executable includes the PDF-based documentation, and you'd do well to read it before proceeding with installation. That way you'll know why you're being prompted to define an Administrator User password and a Trusted User password, and what it means if you check the "Include DLL files when creating control list" box.

The install process has changed since the last edition. Previously, you could choose whether or not to have Anti-Executable scan your system and add files to the whitelist. Opting out of that initial scan left you with a blank whitelist, meaning every program would be blocked. Sensibly, the current version always runs an initial scan.

Anti-Executable does assume that your system is malware-free. Its initial scan whitelists absolutely every program it finds, without considering whether it's malware or not. For best protection, you'll want to pre-scan the system with a free, tough cleanup tool like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.70, Comodo Cleaning Essentials 6, or Norton Power Eraser.

As for including DLLs in the scan, doing so will help protect against threats like malicious Browser Helper Objects that don't run from an .EXE file. You can also set it to monitor Java JAR files. In theory, increasing the types of files tracked might affect performance, but I didn't notice any difference.

Execution Control List
The previous edition's separate whitelist and blacklist are now merged into a single Execution Control List. As noted, by default Anti-Executable whitelists every file it finds in a scan. You can go through the list and set it to block specific programs if necessary. Not sure about a file? From the list you can launch a Google search, or look it up in the Faronics Identifile database.

Note that if you check the box to include DLL files, you'll need to update the list. Otherwise launching an authorized executable could trigger dozens of alerts for not-yet-authorized DLLs used by that executable. Just click the Add button, select all relevant drives, and re-run the scan. You can also scan any particular folder and allow or block all found items in that folder, or in that folder and its subfolders.

There's an option to mark any executable on the list as Trusted. That means it's permitted to launch other executable files that aren't whitelisted. This seems a bit dangerous to me; I'd think twice before checking the Trusted box.

You can also whitelist files by publisher; just click Show Publishers and run a scan. Faronics sensibly removed the ability block publishers, since any program not explicitly allowed won't run. This edition also gives you granular control over publisher-based whitelisting. Most often, you'll whitelist all files signed by the specified publisher. Now, though, you can also whitelist based on the product name, the filename, and even the specific file versions. I'm not seeing the value of control at this level of detail; perhaps it's more significant in Enterprise settings.

Chinese scalpers booking up all Genius Bar appointments & selling online

Chinese scalpers booking up all Genius Bar appointments & selling online | 9to5Mac

Beijing Morning News?reports that local ticket scalpers have found a new way to make money on Apple: booking up all available Genius Bar appointments and then offering them for sale online.

Ticket scalpers usually make their money by buying large quantities of event tickets as soon as they go on sale then illegally selling them for more than face value once the event is sold out. With Genius Bar appointments, they don?t even need to fork out cash in the first place: they just use a bunch of email addresses to make the appointments then advertise them online.

Appointments sell for 10- yuan ($1.60-6.40) in a country where the average monthly salary is equivalent to $580.?A?Beijing Morning News reporter found there were no appointments available on the Apple site for iPhone, iPad or iPod. They contacted one of the advertisers asking for an appointment the next day and were offered a choice of two local stores and two time slots. The reporter was sent login details for the booking by instant messenger, and was then able to access the booking on the Apple site to change the details to their own.

The reporter contacted Apple for comment, but had not received a reply at the time of writing.

Thanks, Numble.

Stefano Domenicali wants Ferrari to understand tyres better ...

Stefano Domenicali wants Ferrari to understand tyres better ? Formula 1 news

Stefano Domenicali believes that Ferrari need to understand the new Pirelli tyres in a better way in order to continue fighting for victories with consistency.

The team boss claimed, ?For sure we have lost the gap that we had. Race pace was very strong but in these conditions here (in Hungary) we have seen that we are not where we want to be on both softs and mediums. We must understand, if this is the case, how to react from here.?

He went onto say, ?Of course a lot depends on the compounds chosen for the races towards the end of the season. It is something we need to analyse carefully and it seems that Mercedes has solved the issues they were suffering with massively during the race in these conditions, that's for sure.?

At the start of the season, it appeared that the championship battle will be between Lotus, Red Bull and Ferrari, as these teams understood the tyres better than their rivals and appeared to be quite quick, in terms of race pace.

However, things started changing with the passage of time, as Mercedes improved to a great extent and started challenging for podiums with consistency. Earlier, their drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were only able to cause problems for others during the qualifiers, but they started to get better in terms of race pace too.

This allowed the latter of the two to claim a couple of wins for his team, but a change in Pirelli tyres meant that Mercedes were once again in an uncertain situation. However, Hamilton proved that there were no major issues for the team, as he stormed to a victory in Hungary, where the conditions were not ideal for the Silver Arrows.

This has put Ferrari into a difficult situation now, as they have got to deal with another team now. They were hopeful of being aggressive this season, but have come under immense pressure now, as they do not have the speed to win races.

The second half of the season will be extremely important now and the Italian squad will have to understand the tyres better in order to make a strong comeback in the title fight.

LeBron James' Label as Most Popular NBA Player Justified by Recent Championships

Miami Heat superstar LeBron James was voted as the NBA's most popular player in ESPN's latest poll, as reported by the network's Darren Rovell.

It makes sense that respect and likability have both risen for the game's best player after he took home MVP accolades in both of the past two regular seasons and NBA Finals.

Now that the self-proclaimed "King" has two rings to his name, his popularity increase is suitable.

James has justified his greatness by taking his game to another level in the past two campaigns, which has resulted in the Heat winning back-to-back Larry O'Brien Trophies. He beat out Los Angeles Lakers all-time great Kobe Bryant in the poll by a nose, receiving 12.9 percent of the vote while Bryant garnered 12.5.

Video Credit: ESPN

At the mere age of 28, there is plenty of time for the still-healthy James to add to his accolades in his prime.

Initially when James made the infamous appearance on a TV special known as The Decision, and stated he would take his talents from the Cleveland Cavaliers to South Beach, many were outraged.

As Rovell notes, the 2008-09 season was the last time James was polled as the Association's most popular player. It was also his last in Cleveland, where his percentage of popularity was at 15.6. That number dipped to 10.2 and 9.4 in the past two polls.

Criticism over James' lackluster playoff performances plagued the end of his tenure with the Cavs, and the poignancy didn't decrease after a disappointing showing in the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Heat lost that series in James' inaugural campaign in Miami, but now the perception of James has taken a complete 180.

There are no doubts as to whether Dwyane Wade or James is the best player on the Heat. It's James' team now, despite Wade's perpetual presence with the organization that drafted him in 2003.

A noticeable adjustment James made was his efficiency and three-point shooting. He posted career highs in field goal percentage (.565), three-point percentage (.402), rebounds (eight per game) and had his second-best assist numbers with an average of 7.3 dimes per contest.

With all the money James has and his incredible physical gifts and talents, he could have rested on his laurels, coasted for several more years and put off figuring out how to win championships for later in his career.

But that isn't what champions do, and it isn't what James did. His evolution as a basketball player is nearly impossible for NBA fans not to appreciate regardless of their perception of him, and it's reflected in the level of popularity James is currently experiencing.

Nike's PR director Heidi Burgett captured the scene of James' recent visit to China:

Who is your favorite NBA player?

Who is your favorite NBA player?

  • LeBron James

  • Kobe Bryant

  • Kevin Durant

  • Derrick Rose

  • Dwyane Wade

  • Other?comment below

James has always desired to build his brand on a global scale. While it may have detracted from his attention on the court as the early phase of his career progressed, the glamor has certainly seemed to take a backseat.

At the forefront for James now are the blood, sweat and tears toward the single accomplishment that earns the highest praise from fans.

Winning.

The best basketball player on the planet has learned to do just that with his second NBA team, and observers have adjusted accordingly.

The stat geek ? Numbers, streaks around the Indians, baseball

36 ? Per Elias, entering Saturday?s game, Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus has a 36-game hit streak against the Indians. That?s now the longest streak against the franchise since Ken Griffey Jr. hit safely in 35 straight games.

6-1 ? After Ryan Raburn?s three-run, walk-off home run on Friday night, the Indians are tied with the Kansas City Royals for the MLB?s best record in extra-inning games at 6-1.

2 HR in 2 ? Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth this week became the second player with back-to-back multi-home run games after the Indians? Ryan Raburn did it April 29-30.

0 top gems ? As of the middle of this past week, the Indians were in the top-10 of ESPN?s Web Gems count with 20 but were one of only two teams without a No. 1 gem, saved for the best play of the night. The St. Louis Cardinals haven?t come in at No. 1, either. The Royals and Baltimore Orioles led the league in total Web Gems with 28 and 27, respectively.

42,000 ? New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia has now thrown more than 42,000 pitches since 2001, the most in all of baseball.

7 R in 3 ? Sabathia also allowed seven runs in three consecutive starts for the first time over those 42,000 pitches.

1-for-23 ? Yankees reliever David Robertson has a knack for getting out of a jam. Since 2011, opponents are 1-for-23 with the bases loaded against him.

0-6 ? Yankees first baseman Lyle Overbay didn?t have the best games against Boston last week. He went 0-6 and grounded into two double plays. The last person to make eight outs in six at-bats? Mark Teixeria, against Boston last October.

None in 27 ? Entering Saturday?s games, the Yankees haven?t had a home run from a right-handed batter in 27 games. That?s the longest streak since 1972.

No power ? And since June 27, the Yankees have hit the fewest home runs (eight) while allowing the second-most (31).

6 K?s snapped ? Detroit Tigers starter Max Scherzer only struck out five batters in his last start against the Chicago White Sox, snapping a streak of 19 consecutive starts of striking out at least six. It was the longest streak of that kind to start a season since Pedro Martinez (29) and Randy Johnson (23) in 2000.

0-to-a lot ? After San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum threw a no-hitter last week, he was hit pretty hard in his next start, surrendering eight runs on nine hits to the Cincinnati Reds. He?s just the sixth pitcher to give up eight or more runs after a no-hitter since 1900. Philip Humber of the White Sox did it last season.

102.1 ? Mark Ellis of the Los Angeles Dodgers singled off of the Reds? Aroldis Chapman on a pitch that traveled 102.1 mph. It?s the fastest pitch resulting in a hit in five seasons.

? Ryan Lewis

Upbeat European figures give markets a lift

LONDON (AP) ? Surprisingly strong economic figures out of Europe and upbeat earnings from Apple helped shore up markets Wednesday despite earlier concerns over China.

Financial information company Markit said its monthly purchasing managers' index ? a broad gauge of economic activity ? for the 17-country eurozone rose for the fourth month running, to 50.4 points in July from 48.7 the previous month.

The increase, which was larger than anticipated, suggests the eurozone economy is growing again ? anything above 50 indicates an expansion. Hopes have grown of late that official figures next month may show that the eurozone's recession, which started in late 2011, may have come to an end in the second quarter.

"Yesterday's weakness and indecision in the markets, prompted by a general dearth of major news, has been banished as investors look to some surprisingly positive data from the eurozone," said Yusuf Heusen, a sales trader at IG.

"Market-moving economic data has been absent so far this week, so today's figures have been gratefully received by a market that, the occasional stop-hunt aside, is still casting around for reasons to move higher," Heusen added.

In Europe, Germany's DAX was up 0.9 percent at 8,392 while the CAC-40 in France rose 1.2 percent to 3,971. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.6 percent at 6,637. The PMI survey did little for the euro though, which was trading flat, but near recent highs, at $1.3220.

In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.1 percent at 15,583 while the broader S&P 500 index rose 0.2 percent to 1,695.

The latest run of U.S. corporate earnings statements did little to alter the market mood. Though earnings from Boeing and Ford were better than expected, Caterpillar disappointed.

The big mover was Apple, which saw its share price rise nearly 5 percent following its after-hours statement on Tuesday that sales of iPhones helped quarterly profits rise by more than expected in the markets.

"Last night's numbers from Apple were also a welcome respite for the tech sector which has struggled in the current earnings season," said Andy McLevey, head of dealing at Interactive Investor.

Earlier during the Asian session, Chinese shares were in focus after a survey showed the country's manufacturing fell to its lowest point in nearly a year. HSBC said its preliminary estimate for its purchasing managers' index for July declined more than expected to an 11-month low, another sign of a deepening economic slowdown.

The widely watched report is one of the earliest indicators on the health of China's economy, the world's second biggest. Analysts say the findings pave the way for more disappointment.

The Shanghai Composite Index in mainland China closed 0.5 percent lower at 2,033.33 after falling as much as 1.3 percent.

Elsewhere in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 0.3 percent to 14,731.28. Other indexes reversed earlier losses to finish in positive territory. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.2 percent to 21,968.93 and South Korea's Kospi rose 0.4 percent to 1,912.

Powerball jackpot closing in on another record

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? A little more than a year after three tickets split a world-record lottery prize, the jackpot for Saturday's Powerball drawing was nearing historic territory.

Should nobody pick the correct six numbers, the prize money will roll over to next week's drawing and almost certainly eclipse the $656 million doled out to winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland in the Mega Millions game in March 2012.

But the record could fall Saturday night too if a flurry of last-minute ticket purchases pushes the jackpot much above its current $600 million level. Since the previous drawing on Wednesday, it had grown by at least $236 million.

"If there was no chance, you wouldn't do it," said New Jersey attorney Rubin Sinins, who represented five construction workers who claimed a colleague cheated them out of a share of a multimillion-dollar lottery jackpot.

It seems simple enough: Just correctly pick five white balls out of a drum of 59 and one red one out of a drum of 35.

However, the odds of a single $2 ticket hitting the correct combination are about 1 in 175.2 million. That's slightly less likely than randomly drawing the name of one specific female in the United States: 1 in 157 million, according to the last census.

With such an astronomic payoff available for the lucky ticket holder, some buyers are content to settle for just a share of the winnings.

In Houston, city firefighter John Paetow and a dozen of his colleagues kicked in $10 each for the drawing, as they do occasionally when a the stakes soar into the lottery stratosphere.

"With firemen it's a camaraderie thing," said Paetow, 59. "It just makes sense to pool our money; it buys more tickets, gives us a better chance of winning."

Even if Saturday's drawing doesn't top last year's Mega Millions jackpot, it's already the highest in Powerball history, surpassing that game's $587.5 million record set in November 2012.

A major reason for the sales surge is that last month, Powerball landed the nation's most populous state as California joined 42 others that offer the game. California lottery director Robert O'Neill said the state had brought "sunshine and good fortune" to Powerball.

The Multi-State Lottery Association conducts the drawing live Saturday night from Tallahassee, Fla. The balls are weighed and X-rayed, and there are practice runs before the official televised version.

Cast AR handson with Jeri Ellsworth at Maker Faire 2013

When Valve's first hardware hire, Jeri Ellsworth, tweeted back in February that she was fired from the company, we were disappointed but also intrigued by what she meant by "time for new exciting projects." Well we finally saw what she's been up to here at at Maker Faire 2013. It's called Cast AR, and it's a pair of 3D augmented-reality glasses that she and former Valve programmer Rick Johnson were working on at Valve before they left.

The model we saw is still in the early prototype stages, but the concepts are already in place. Perched atop a pair of active shutter glasses are a couple of miniature LCD projectors, which bounce images from a connected computer onto a special reflective surface at a 120Hz refresh rate. A camera module sits on the eyewear's bridge and monitors an array of infrared LEDs embedded in the reflective surface. This allows for quick and accurate head tracking. Join us after the break for our impressions and stay tuned for our video interview with Jeri Ellsworth.

Iraqis mourn 2 Shiite fighters killed in Syria

BASRA, Iraq (AP) ? Hundreds of Iraqis attended the Friday funeral in a southern city of two Shiite fighters killed in Syria. Several such funerals have been held in recent months, the latest sign that the conflict has taken on a sectarian regional dimension.

Mourners in the oil-rich city of Basra carried the coffin of Mohammed Aboud, whom they say was killed by sniper fire near the shrine of Sayida Zeinab outside the Syrian capital Damascus five days before.

They said Aboud went to Iran two months ago before flying to Syria in order to join a group of fighters protecting that country's Shiite shrines against attacks launched by the rebel Free Syrian Army.

For months Iraqi Shiite fighters have trickled into Syria, where mostly Sunni rebels are fighting a regime dominated by a Shiite offshoot sect. Their relatives say the fighters are drawn by a sense of religious duty to protect the Sayida Zeinab shrine, which marks what is believed to be the grave of the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad. Iraq remains officially neutral in the Syrian conflict.

There have been regular clashes in the area of the shrine, but it is impossible to verify what the Shiite fighters are actually doing. The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah has also recently said that supporters of the Shiite militant group are fighting in Syria and said Shiites have "a duty to protect the Sayida Zeinab shrine."

Six men wearing military camouflage carried Aboud's coffin, painted in the colors of the Iraqi flag. "Sigh in grief, Zeinab," was written on its front.

The coffin of the other slain fighter, Hassan Ali, was rushed to Baghdad at the start of the funeral. Relatives said both bodies were transported from Syria via Iran before being returned to Iraq.

Aboud's uncle Ali Abbas said that the family received a phone call from a Shiite fighter in Syria informing that his nephew was killed during clashes near the shrine.

"We are proud of our martyr who was sacrificed his life while defending the religion, holy shrines and righteousness," Abbas said.

Some of the mourners chanted slogans against the Sunni-dominated Free Syrian Army rebel group and the al-Qaida-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra, which in the past year has become the most effective fighting force within the opposition trying to topple Assad.

Relatives said that the two bodies were received at the Shalamja border crossing with Iran. Earlier this month, another body for killed Iraq Shiite fighter was also brought through Iran.

Tehran's alleged role in repatriating bodies strengthens suggestions that it is coordinating the movement of foreign fighters to aid its embattled ally, Syria.

Sprint closes deal to buy spectrum and customers from U.S. Cellular in the Midwest

Sprint

PCS spectrum and 420,000 U.S. Cellular customers part of deal

Sprint has announced that it's closed a deal to purchase PCS spectrum and a large number of customers from U.S. Cellular in the Midwest. As part of the deal, Sprint gets its hands on 20MHz of PCS airwaves in " various Midwest markets including Chicago, South Bend, Ind., and Champaign, Ill.," and 10MHz in St. Louis. As part of the transaction, Sprint will also inherit around 420,000 U.S. Cellular customers.

The customers affected by the purchase have already been informed, Sprint says, and it aims to offer them a smooth transition to its own network or one of its pre-paid brands, on a "similar or better" device at "little or no cost." The additional spectrum will help Sprint boost its network in these areas, as it looks to expand its 4G LTE coverage.

Famed 'hatchet hitchhiker' arrested in NJ homicide

In this undated photo downloaded from the Union County Prosecutor?s website, Caleb ?Kai? Lawrence McGillivary is shown. In this undated photo downloaded from the Union County Prosecutor?s website, Caleb ?Kai? Lawrence McGillivary is shown. The homeless hitchhiker had previously gained Internet and TV celebrity status by using a hatchet to intervene in an attack in California on a utility worker on Feb. 1, 2013. (AP Photo/Union County Prosecutor?s Office)

(AP) ? A homeless, hatchet-wielding hitchhiker who became an Internet hero earlier this year was arrested Thursday for allegedly beating a New Jersey lawyer to death inside his home.

Caleb "Kai" McGillvary, whose star turn as "Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker" came after he intervened in an attack on a California utility worker, was arrested at a Philadelphia bus station, Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow said.

"I believe that everyone is a little safer with this person off the streets," the prosecutor said. Philadelphia police could not immediately be reached for comment.

McGillvary was charged with killing Joseph Galfy, Jr., a Clark, N.J. attorney found dead Monday. Romankow said he will be processed and sent to back to New Jersey, where his bail is set at $3 million.

Galfy's body was found two days after authorities said he met McGillvary in New York City. Galfy, 73, was found wearing only his underwear and socks by police who went to his home to check on his well-being.

Statements posted on McGillvary's Facebook page following the homicide indicated the encounter was sexual in nature, Romankow said, though he declined to go into specific detail.

On his Facebook page, McGillvary's last post, dated Tuesday, asks "what would you do?" if you awoke in a stranger's house and found you'd been drugged and sexually assaulted. One commenter suggests hitting him with a hatchet ? and McGillvary's final comment on the post says, "I like your idea."

A hatchet helped give McGillvary a brief taste of fame in February when he gave a rambling, profanity-laced 5-minute interview to a Fresno, Calif. television station about thwarting an attack on a Pacific Gas & Electric employee. The interview went viral, with one version viewed more than 3.9 million times on YouTube. He later appeared on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

Kimmel asked him what people were saying to him since the Feb. 1 incident. "Hey, you're Kai, that dude with the hatchet," he responded.

McGillvary, who said in his TV appearance he prefers to be called "home-free" instead of homeless, traded on his newfound celebrity to meet fans across the country, according to Romankow.

McGillvary met Galfy on Saturday in Times Square, then spent at least two nights at his home on a cul-de-sac in Clark, 20 miles west of New York, Romankow said. His movements after that included two trips to meet a fan in Asbury Park, a trip to Philadelphia and another to Glassboro in southern New Jersey before he took a train bound for Philadelphia, authorities said.

McGillvary swiftly gained notoriety in February after he intervened in an apparently unprovoked attack that led to charges including attempted murder.

McGillvary said he was riding in a car with a man who veered into the worker, got out of the car, then said "I am Jesus and I am here to take you home" before attacking. McGillvary said he then pulled a hatchet from his backpack and struck the driver in the head several times to subdue him, The Fresno Bee reported.

"That woman was in danger," Kai told KMPH-TV. "He just finished, what looked like at the time, killing somebody, and if he hadn't done that he would have killed more people."

Last month, the driver entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, according to The Fresno Bee.

In his television interview, McGillvary also said he'd once intervened in what he called a domestic violence situation.

A man "starts beating up on this woman who he calls his," McGillvary told the television station. "I started smashing him in the head and the teeth."

McGillvary also goes by the names Kai Lawrence, Caleb Kai Lawrence and Kai Nicodemus, prosecutors said.

Daily Chronicle | Sheriff's family fosters a healthy home

Alex Scott, 14, and David Scott, 8, play parachute with their foster brother, who cannot be identified, in the front yard of their adopted family's home May 3 in DeKalb. Roger and Marcia Scott have fostered more than 40 children since 1985. Of those children, the Scotts have adopted five. (Monica Maschak ? mmaschak@shawmedia.com)

Some people call Roger and Marcia Scott crazy. Others have called them extraordinary.

They think of themselves simply as parents.

Over the past 25 years, the Scotts have taken in more than 40 foster children, and their family continues to grow.

?I thought I would do this for a few years, help out a few children, and then he would retire and we?d be off on our own,? Marcia Scott said. ?But it just never happened that way.?

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott and Marcia?s family consists of five adopted children: Tom and Angie, both 22; Ebony, 19; Alex, 14; and David, 8. They currently are fostering a 5-year-old boy with special needs and a 16-month-old girl. The DeKalb couple also have three grown biological children and nine grandchildren.

Although the Scotts have gone the extra mile in helping children in need, there are many more who still need help. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services reported nearly 15,000 children in Illinois were placed in foster care, group homes or institutions last year, while about only 1,700 are adopted each year.

More than 100 of the children placed in foster care in Illinois live in DeKalb County.

Eileen Liezert ? the northern Illinois regional vice president of Children?s Home and Aid, a private agency that places children in foster homes ? said the need for foster parents is on the rise as the agency receives an additional 50 to 75 children a year.

Marcia was inspired to become a foster parent around the time Roger became sheriff in 1985. She was watching an Oprah special on the need for foster parents and thought she would be up to the challenge. She persuaded her husband, and they eventually became licensed foster parents.

After taking in several children over the years, the Scotts went from foster parents to a family.

?Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would be at the point of adopting our seventh child,? Marcia said.

The relationships the Scotts have formed with their foster children are part of the reason they chose to adopt.

?When they come as babies and they stay six and seven years, what do you do? Pat them on the back and say, ?Oh, it?s been nice having you, but it?s time to move out and find someone else?? ? she said. ?Some people can do that. I just couldn?t do that.?

Ebony Scott said every morning in the house with so many people can be hectic, but that?s why they have established a routine. But she?s grateful for the life she has built with her family.

?You can be raised by a really loving family like we were, or it could be the opposite way,? she said. ?It just depends.?

Even after fostering children for 25 years, Roger said the job can still be difficult.

?Recognize that it?s not easy,? he said. ?It?s not like TV. It?s not like the Duggar family.?

Marcia said her goal of taking in foster children is to provide them with a childhood full of the love and happiness they deserve.

While some people may expect praise for the work they put into raising foster children, the Scotts said it?s become a way of life, and they wouldn?t have it any other way.

?I think the hugs and the smiles make it all worthwhile,? Roger said. ?The piggyback rides. You?re always doing it. Our life is just a recycle.?

Marcia agreed.

?Sometimes people ask me, ?Aren?t you tired of this?? ? she said. ?But how can you be tired of hugs and kisses??

DeKalb County foster care numbers (as of April 30)
? 103 children placed in out-of-home care
? 64 children in foster care
? 38 children living with relatives
? 1 in institution or group home
? 2,500 children legally free for adoption

Total Recall: Movies Directed by Tyler Perry

We count down the best-reviewed directorial work of the Peeples producer.

Tyler Perry

The critics haven't exactly been kind to Tyler Perry over the years, but with nearly $700 million in lifetime domestic grosses, he's definitely a filmmaker who understands his audience -- and with that audience preparing to lineup for his latest production, this weekend's Tyler Perry Presents Peeples, we thought now would be the perfect time to take a look back at the best-reviewed entries in his ever-growing filmography. Put on your Sunday dress, pull up those support hose, and grab a shotgun -- it's Tyler Perry Presents Tyler Perry's Total Recall!

26%

Say what you will about Tyler Perry's movies, but he consistently manages to assemble casts filled with excellent actors -- and for 2007's Daddy's Little Girls, his talent included Idris Elba, Louis Gossett, Jr., and Gabrielle Union. Unfortunately, all that thespian power wasn't enough to rescue the movie from critical brickbats, but for a select few scribes, this story of a blue-collar mechanic (Elba) who falls for a wealthy attorney (Union) threw off enough fizzy rom-com sparks to compensate for its thinly sketched characters and exposition-heavy script. "I entered this moviegoing experience ready for a lot of wincing and eye-rolling," admitted Toddy Burton of the Austin Chronicle, "but dammit if this movie didn't make me laugh and cry."

26%

Given how regularly she tussles with her kin, you'd think a family reunion would be the last thing Madea would want to plan, but that's exactly what she does in Madea's Family Reunion, the 2006 adaptation of Perry's play in which his infamously cranky matriarch finds herself at the center of a fresh batch of poorly timed familial drama. This time around, Madea has to juggle preparations for the titular event with a mounting series of problems, including her sister's funeral, the court-ordered delivery of a maladjusted teen (Keke Palmer), and the personal travails of her nieces (played by Rochelle Aytes and Lisa Anderson). "Let's not sell Tyler Perry short," urged Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly amidst Family Reunion's poor critical reception. "As the vinegar-witted Madea, he's a drag performer of testy charm, but in his overlit patchwork way he's also making the most primal women's pictures since Joan Crawford flexed her shoulder pads."

29%

Two decades after Jim Varney's Ernest ended up in the big house, Tyler Perry followed suit with Madea Goes to Jail, an adaptation of his play about the pistol-packing granny's adventures in the hoosegow. In court after being arrested for the high-speed chase she led police through during Meet the Browns, Madea gets off on a technicality, only to go on an immediate rampage that finds her threatening uninvited houseguests with a machine gun and clearing a Kmart parking space with a forklift truck. Safely behind bars, she meets up with a hooker with a heart of gold (played, to many audience members' intense discomfort, by Keshia Knight Pulliam of Cosby Show fame) and before long, everyone gets a happy ending (not that kind -- get your mind out of the gutter). That's a lot of plot for one movie to handle, and quite a few critics felt Perry bungled the tricky business of integrating Madea Goes to Jail's drama with its comedy -- but that was a minor complaint for Melissa Anderson of the Village Voice, who shrugged, "As ridiculous as his films frequently are, Perry, a shrewd yet benevolent showman, knows and loves his audience."

32%

Like many of Perry's movies, Good Deeds' title contains a touch of punny humor -- its protagonist (played by Perry, natch) is a good guy named Walter Deeds -- but it's also a simple statement of purpose. For this 2012 drama, Perry tried taking a look at just how powerful one good deed can be, showing Walter as a well-meaning but socially insulated businessman whose chance encounter with a struggling cleaning lady (Thandie Newton) sparks a profound change in his life. It's the type of premise that demands a feather-light touch from a filmmaker, and unfortunately, most critics agreed that Perry's direction and screenplay smothered Good Deeds in poorly paced, dully delivered drama. Slant Magazine's Rob Humanick offered one of the few dissenting opinions, however, asserting that "Perry's considerate plotting is deliberate, perhaps even overlong, but with an attuned sense of people's evolving feelings and relationships."

32%

Another Tyler Perry play that made the jump from stage to screen, Meet the Browns follows the adventures of a struggling single mother (Angela Bassett) who gets a double whammy: first she loses her job, then she finds out that her father (who she's never even met) has died. Far from a mopey drama, however, Browns provides its desperate protagonist with a family she never knew she had -- including, of course, an irascible, linebacker-shaped old lady named Madea. At this point, the lines were already pretty well drawn between Perry's audience and his critics, and for the most part, they stayed on opposite sides for Meet the Browns, although it did resonate with some scribes -- like Entertainment Weekly's Lisa Schwarzbaum, who wrote, "The importance of faith, church, kin, staying off drugs, sharing food, repenting from sin, forgiving sinners, appreciating a good black man, rejecting a bad one, and honoring black matriarchy is enumerated with typical, reassuring Perry broadness."
