Effective Advice That Will Help You Successfully Build Muscle ...

Watch your cardio workouts if you are trying to gain muscle. Cardiovascular workouts can actually burn muscle, so they should always be done separate from your muscle-building routines. Try to do cardiovascular workouts on a separate day or better yet, take a break from them for a few weeks while you focus completely on muscle gain.

If you really want to start an effective muscle-building routine, consider hiring a trainer. A trainer can help you to get and maintain proper form and can also introduce you to exercises that you might not have considered before. Find one at your local gym or YMCA, and use their services at least twice a week.

Utilize super-sets in your workout regimen. By doing two exercises back to back without resting, the working muscles are placed on a much higher demand. Super-sets typically include opposing muscle groups, which include biceps and triceps. By doing an isolation move after a large compound exercise, additional growth can occur.

Most people use the same repetition speeds for all their workouts. Try something different the next time you are working out and speed up your repetitions. By using faster lifting speeds, you can actually target and work out diverse muscle fibres, some, which may not get stimulated as often.

If you have enough time, consider breaking up workouts into two different sessions per day. For example, you could train your chest in the morning, and then once evening strikes, you can train your back. Resting your body in between lets your energy stores recover better than training both muscles during the same workout.

To build a muscular physique, keep stress in check. Men who are stressed may experience lower testosterone levels, and this hormone encourages muscle growth. In addition, stress increases cortisol levels, and this hormone actually inhibits muscle growth. Teach yourself some relaxation exercises and find other outlets for your stress, and you may reach your muscle-gaining goals even faster.

Perform your lifting regimen every other day. After a vigorous workout, the protein synthesis process can take up to 48 hours to complete. In other words, your body builds muscle for up to two-day post-workout, and working out while your body is still recovering may undo your hard work. Enjoy the day of rest?it will help to maximize your results.

If you would like to build muscle mass and have larger muscles, you need to focus on three basic exercises that will build mass, increase conditioning, and increase strength. These exercises are the squat, bench press, and deadlift. These are critical in your weight-training routine in some form or another.

Drew Brees talks about the NFL's bounty investigation on 'Late Show'

Drew Brees will appear on today's episode of "Late Show with David Letterman," which was taped on Tuesday and will air at 10:35 p.m. During his interview with Letterman, Brees again responded to questions about the NFL's pay-for-performance bounty investigation.

"It's certainly not a positive thing," Brees said. "I mean, just the whole process itself and the investigation I feel like has been extremely unfair. Unfortunately, it seems like it's been more of a media campaign then it is actually finding the truth to the matter."?

Brees said, as he has in the past, that he was not aware that a "pay-to-injure" program existed during former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' time with the New Orleans Saints from 2009-11.

"... That's not something that I believe our team would be engaged in, and I think for all of us, it was a shock when we were accused of that because that's a pretty heinous accusation," Brees said. "So the entire time for a lot of us, it's been, 'Show us the proof, put forth the facts and, if indeed it is proved that there was a pay-to-injure program in place, then, yes, there should be punishment enforced.' Unfortunately, to this pointthere's been no hard evidence to show that that was indeed taking place."?

Brees again drew a distinction between the terms "pay-for-performance" and "pay-to-injure" when asked about the legality of the program.

"There's two things here: There's a pay-for-performance and then there's pay-to-injure," Brees said. "The NFL, through their media campaign, has combined the two and said that these were going on, but combined them as if they were the same thing. They're not the same thing.

"Pay-for-performance would be if I was a kick returner and I said to all the guys blocking for me, 'Hey, if I score a touchdown, if you get me in the end zone, I'll give you all $100' or 'I'll take you all out to eat.'? It's just a benefit, a reward.? That's a pay-for-performance, and that's just players taking care of players.? It has nothing to do with the front office management, owner, anyone.? Pay-to-injure is the same thing except it's, 'Hey, I'll give you money if you go and intentionally hurt somebody."?

China spacecraft returns to Earth

Astronauts Liu Yang, Jing Haipeng and Liu Wang landed the capsule

A Chinese space capsule carrying three crew members has returned to Earth following a 13-day mission.

Images of the capsule landing in Inner Mongolia at 10:05 local time (02:05 GMT) were shown live on television.

The astronauts, including China's first woman in space, carried out a successful manual docking with the Tiangong-1 laboratory module.

The mission is a key step towards China's goal of building a space station by 2020.

Premier Wen Jiabao hailed the mission as a "complete success".

Analysis

The mission has received blanket coverage in Chinese state media, with the landing of the space capsule in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia carried live on state TV.

Among the astronauts helped out of the acorn-shaped module was a beaming Liu Yang - the country's first female astronaut.

Unknown until a few days before this mission, she now returns to Earth as one of the most recognisable faces in China.

During their time in space, the astronauts carried the country's first manual docking operation in orbit - seen as crucial step if the country is to achieve its goal of building a space station in the next decade. Beijing has also raised the possibility that it may send a man to the moon.

China still lags far behind the space powers of Russia and the US when it comes to technological expertise. But for the moment, money and momentum are on the side of Beijing when it comes to space exploration.

"This is another outstanding contribution by the Chinese people to humanity's efforts to explore and use space," Mr Wen said in Beijing.

"It feels so good to stand on Earth, and it feels even better to be home," astronaut Liu Wang was quoted by national broadcaster CCTV as saying.

"Tiangong-1, our home in space, was comfortable and pleasant. We're very proud of our nation," female astronaut Liu Yang said.

Manual docking

The crew of the Shenzhou-9 craft successfully carried out the country's manual docking manoeuvre earlier in the week.

The delicate procedure, which involved bringing together two orbiting vessels travelling at thousands of miles an hour, was mastered by the USSR and US space teams in the 1960s.

The crew also carried out automatic docking of the two crafts during their mission.

The three astronauts returned to the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft on Thursday and performed a manual separation from the space laboratory.

They touched down in Inner Mongolia's Siziwang county, with the capsule deploying a parachute to slow its approach.

All the astronauts were in good health, state-run news agency Xinhua reported. They were shown on CCTV leaving the capsule carried on chairs, smiling as they waved to supporters.

The crew included Jing Haipeng, 45, the mission commander and a veteran astronaut, Liu Yang, 33, and Liu Wang, 43, who performed the manual docking.

Ms Liu, 33, is a major in China's air force from the central province of Henan. On China's Tencent QQ messaging service, she goes by the name "little Flying Knight".

She was recruited into China's space programme only two years ago, but she excelled, the official news agency Xinhua says.

The Shenzhou-9 spacecraft was launched on 16 June.

FBI takes Peter Madoff into custody in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) ? The younger brother of Bernard Madoff, who became an icon for financial crime after the economy collapsed in 2008, is poised to plead guilty to criminal charges and take his place in history alongside the sibling with whom he shared an office for decades.

Peter Madoff, 66, was taken into custody at his lawyer's Manhattan office around 7 a.m. EDT Friday, according to FBI spokesman J. Peter Donald. The procedure was a prelude to a court appearance scheduled a few hours later.

The plea was to take place at same Manhattan courthouse where his now 74-year-old brother was taken away in handcuffs after he was condemned to 150 years in prison in 2009 for cheating thousands of people of billions of dollars. They are the only Madoff family members to face criminal charges.

The proceeding in which Madoff is agreeing to serve 10 years in prison and surrender his assets will let investigators show what they have learned about the largest Ponzi scheme ever prosecuted in U.S. history since Bernard Madoff revealed in December 2008 that his investment business was a sham.

The government has used the cooperation of six former employees and associates of the Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC to learn what went on inside the secretive business that caused close to $20 billion to vanish, leaving only a few hundred million dollars where bogus financial statements claimed there was $65 billion.

The plea by Peter Madoff to conspiracy and falsifying records charges links him again to his notorious brother, reviving a relationship in which he kept firmly behind the scenes as Bernard Madoff provided the face of the investment firm that attracted rich and famous clients with too-good-to-be-true returns.

In his 2009 guilty plea, the elder Madoff maintained that his brother had nothing to do with it ? and for more than three years, his brother stuck to the script.

"Peter Madoff is not Bernard Madoff" is how Peter Madoff's lawyers put it when defending him against harsh accusations leveled by a trustee appointed to recover stolen assets.

Details of how the multimillionaire decided to agree to a plea deal haven't been made public. His lawyer hasn't commented on it.

The FBI had been suspicious from the start about a man who had worked side by side with his scheming brother for more than 40 years.

Friends and business associates had described the brothers as very close. Their offices at Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC in midtown Manhattan were a few feet apart. Their families vacationed together.

A graduate of Fordham Law School, Peter Madoff was the firm's top technocrat.

He was credited with creating a computer trading system for the firm in the late 1970s and early 1980s that was considered groundbreaking at the time. He ran the daily trading operation while his brother focused on the more secretive investment advisory arm.

He made a good enough living to own a $1.7 million home in Old Westbury, on Long Island, and a Palm Beach, Fla., vacation house that recently sold for $5.5 million.

When Bernard Madoff was arrested, Peter Madoff broke the news to Madoff Securities employees. And he was a co-signer on a $10 million bond that won his brother's release.

Through attorneys, he denied any wrongdoing.

But the denial didn't stop federal authorities from moving to freeze Peter Madoff's assets. He agreed not to dispose of his substantial fortune and promised to curtail his personal spending as the investigation moved forward. His living expenses were capped at $10,000 a month.

The court-appointed trustee also went on the attack, accusing Peter Madoff of financing his high-end lifestyle through the fraud.

A complaint filed in bankruptcy court alleged that the Madoff investment business had transferred more than $77 million to Peter Madoff. It said that between 1993 and 2008, he was paid a total of $36 million in salary and bonuses. And it identified other income for Peter Madoff as memberships to country clubs, including Glen Oaks Club in New York and one of Donald Trump's country clubs.

Given Peter Madoff's "level of financial experience and sophistication," the trustee alleged that he either knew or should have known that he reaped gains "derived from purported transactions grounded in fraud and deception."

The trustee also took aim at his daughter Shana, who once worked as an in-house lawyer at the firm and has denied involvement in the scheme.

"Had Peter, as the Chief Compliance Officer, or Shana, as Compliance Counsel, done their jobs properly, the fraud might have been revealed years earlier," the complaint said. "Either they failed completely to carry out their required supervisory/compliance roles, or they knew about the fraud but covered it up."

Defense lawyers responded by branding the complaint "a sensationalistic attempt to lump together members of the Madoff family and create liability by association." Their court papers claimed the scandal has "left Peter Madoff mired in litigation, and has devastated his family emotionally and financially."

The Ford GT is an icon of power and performance, but right now the latest models can be beaten out by Corvettes. This isn't acceptable. Ford is already doing much better as being seen as economical and dependable, but is losing steam as a performance brand. The GT500 is excellent, but I want something that looks like the ultimate supercar and can demolish the top tier corvettes. Using some modern suspension to match the corvettes manueverability and an ecoboost V8 of some kind would be perfect. The GT fits this bill, but the latest 2006 model is just to far behind the times to be able to compete. The car looks FANTASTIC, like a real supercar, and if you add the modern amenities like MyFord Touch and Ecoboost, the GT could compete against Italian supercars for the price of a Corvette. It needs to be marketed to beat the Corvette to, like how the mustang just dominates the muscle car market, the Corvette does to its segment because nothing really competes against it. The GT would have the iconic history and performance to match the corvette and could suck away major sales from GM.

Billed as "medicine's mightiest warrior", she's fighting an epic battle deep inside the human body where she launches rapid-fire assaults on malignant cells. Or, if it's not cancer but diabetes you're fighting, why not join Britney and Hunter, two digital kids whose adventures to other worlds are spurred on by regular and timely updates of your blood sugar levels. They are a far cry from chemotherapy, diabetes medications, or aspirin, but Roxxi, Britney and Hunter are some of the buzz products from those who want to promote health and sell medicines.

Gamification?? turning boring, unpleasantbut necessary tasks into an online game - is a new way of thinking that is gaining momentum among drugmakers and health campaigners. It's an idea that seeks to use natural human instincts ? play and learn ? to help patients to get to know their illness better and adhere properly to treatment regimens or disease monitoring programs. "We all grew up learning through play," said Christian Dawson, strategy director at Woolley Pau Gyro, a healthcare advertising agency. "Gamification is a way pharma can use that basic human instinct to get the right information into peoples' heads."

FINDING FUN FOR SICK CHILDREN

For 10-year-old Eleanor Howarth, being able to play while trying to deal with the shock of being diagnosed with juvenile diabetes was literally a game changer. The British schoolgirl was seven and a half when she was told she had the lifelong condition and, as a result, would need to prick and squeeze blood out of her own finger four times a day to check and register her blood glucose levels. Faced with blank refusals from a terrified child, Eleanor's parents got hold of the "Didget" monitor made by German drugmaker Bayer. It comes with a game called "Knock 'E m Downs" and can be plugged into a Nintendo DS -- the games console loved by millions of children -- and rewards the patient /player for regular blood updates by adding points and new features. "It turned something she was really quite fearful about into something that could be a bit of fun," said Eleanor's father Richard Howarth. Her mother Donna said "itchangedher whole perspectiveon the diabetes." Didget took its inspiration, in part, from Re-Mission, widely cited as one of the first successful health games.

Developed in 2006 by HopeL ab, a non-profit US organisation focused on children's health, and featuring the tumor-fighting Roxxi, it isdesignedto give patients a senseof power and control over the disease and help them understand why they must have certain treatments and what those treatments will do. But games are not just for kids. A recent report by analysts at Ernst and Young on trends in the global life science sector noted the rise of gamification in health and hailed its great potential. "We enjoy playing games -- they motivate us and give us feelings of accomplishment, purpose and social connectivity," the report said. In a chapter dedicated to gamification, J Leighton Read, a US expert on health games argued that "at a time when health care is focused on outcomes and seeking sustainability, the case for gamification has never been stronger."

But can Big Pharma, traditionally so conservative and hampered by stricter marketing regulations than many other sectors, really win from this game? Bayer, one of the early enthusiasts, now has some doubts. A spokeswoman for the German firm said itwas no longer promoting the Didget monitor because of concerns about whether encouraging children to stay indoors playing computer games was the right health message to send out. Since gamification is relatively new in health care, and even newer in the?pharma sector, follow-up studies on its effects are sparse. But research published in the journal Pediatrics found that children who played Re-Mission showed improved behavioral and psychological factors linked with successful cancer treatment. Kieran Walsh, clinical director of BMJ Learning, an education division of the British Medical Journal group, says he's "not an enormous fan" of the term gamification because he fears it can sometimes trivialise medical education. He prefers the term simulation which, in hisfield,uses many of thesame ideas as gamification.

LEARNER CENTRED

Walsh sees the main use, and benefit, of games in this sector emerging from simulations that help doctors and other health professionals learn new skills, or keep up to date with the latest diagnostic guidelines or treatment protocols. Major drugmakers,?Glaxo?SmithKline?and?Pfizer?among them, have reported success with campaigns centered around gamification designed first to attract, and then teach, doctors and other health workers.

Here are four business lessons you can take away from these three atypical businesses:

Have Fun. Each of these businesses has an element of fun and entertainment.? A big part of success in business is enjoying what you do.

Think small, different, unusual. Business ideas don?t have to solve world problems or even major problems. When I talk to people about types of businesses, most think that they must create a product or service that has appeal to the mass market in order to get rich.

When you focus on a creating something that appeals to a small market, chances are your product will have little or no competition?which means your product will be much more valuable than if you market more of a commodity to the mass market.

Find a small gap and test it out on a small level. You never know what might be a huge moneymaker.

Target a very specific niche market to start with.

Finding and selecting a specialized target market is a safer and better bet than targeting the masses when starting out.

Look at it this way? if you want to sell your product or service to the general public, you need a substantial marketing budget because you?ll need to run ads in major publications, do massive direct mail campaigns and spend larger amounts on advertising on the Internet.

Try out your product in a small niche first. Find out if you can make money there first.

Hangover Heaven took their business to the target rich environment of Las Vegas first. They could have decided to target anyone with a hangover, but that would have been a wide net to cast. It?s easier and more effective to find a small select group first. Plus because it?s less overwhelming to figure out how to reach a small audience, you are more likely to take immediate action.

Test a larger market once you find success in a small one.? I imagine that Hangover Heaven will look at branching out to places other places with an ?alcohol-friendly? strip such as Bourbon Street in Louisiana or Atlantic City.

Once you have experienced success in your specialized niche, it?s extremely easy to duplicate your efforts.? Plus you?ll have a lot more money and confidence to fuel your expansion plans.

You don?t have to target business to business. Don?t rule out ideas for the business to consumer niche just because you are used to selling business to business.

For example, if you are a fitness instructor that teaches other fitness instructors how to market their business more successfully, you could look for a new niche product for the consumer market.? Let?s say you are both a fitness instructor and a cancer survivor. You could create a fitness product that shows cancer survivors how to get back in shape after undergoing treatments.

In this case, you could start small by targeting only cancer survivors in your area or only cancer survivors that had the same kind of cancer you did.

Keep these in mind when coming up with product ideas and when looking at marketing products you already have. It makes sense to test out your product on a small scale before rolling it out to a larger audience. And you?ll lower your financial exposure when you avoid going into a market that is too big.

Selecting a specialized target or niche market is an easier and more effective way to get rich.? Plus, you?ll find that targeting a specialized niche allows you to charge more for your product.

Indy eyes NCAA football championship

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Playoffs are coming to major college football. And the decision, which became official Tuesday, spells opportunity for Indianapolis.

It's a big change that could mean big money and the national spotlight for the Circle City.

While the new playoff format will include only four teams, playing in the usual "college bowl" cities, the championship game will be bid out to any city that's interested.

Having just finished playing host to the Super Bowl, professional football's national championship, Indianapolis seems a natural to go after college football's big game. With its indoor facilities and a long history of handling big crowds for both pro and collegiate sports, even in the middle of winter, Indianapolis is sure to be among the top tier of cities in which to play the game.

"This kind of game would not have the kind of impact of the Super Bowl, but it will be very close," said Matt Will, an associate professor of finance at the University of Indianapolis.

Will said the potential payoff of hosting a college football championship is huge for Indianapolis.

"It's outside dollars. You know, that's the key here. These are outside dollars, big money too. The people that like their college teams, they'll spare no expense to see them play," he said.

Moving forward would require a green light from the Indiana Sports Corp., which spearheaded the city's successful bid to host the Super Bowl. But it all starts with the mayor.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard is in Germany, but a spokesperson for him told 24-Hour News 8: "The city is capable of hosting it. It's interested if it makes sense. Everyone has to agree."

It may come down to cost. How much money will it take to win the bid?

"But the key is, it has a snowball effect. Because not only will you attract this one-time audience, you will now be on the consideration list for other events," Will said.

Which means the successful Super Bowl this past February may well put Indianapolis near the top of the list for hosting the 2015 College Football Championship.

While Indianapolis waits for the bid requirements before going full speed ahead, the competition is already under way. Thursday, the Houston Sports Authority announced it will not only go after the college championship game, but "agressively pursue this game." And late Friday, the Chik-Fil-A bowl people said they will work hard to bring the game to Atlanta.

Oilers tap assistant Krueger as new coach

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- The Edmonton Oilers have promoted assistant Ralph Krueger to head coach.

Krueger spent the last two seasons as an assistant under Tom Renney, whose contract was not renewed after the Oilers finished 29th in the NHL last season at 32-40-10.

"It's been a natural, healthy 23 years of growth as a coach and I'm ready for this situation," Krueger said Wednesday at a press conference to announce his hiring.

The Oilers gave a three-year contract to the 52-year-old Krueger, who played and coached in Europe and was coach of the Swiss national team from 1997-2010. He coached the Swiss team in 12 world championships and three Olympics.

Edmonton is hoping to turn around its fortunes after having the top draft pick the last three years. The Oilers selected speedy Russian forward Nail Yakupov with the top pick in last week's draft after picking forwards Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins the previous two years.

"We are not going to be focusing on winning, winning, winning to the point that it suffocates us and we squeeze our sticks," Krueger said. "We have skill in our room that's so exciting and I need to find ways that their instincts can play freely. We want to be known as a hard-working team on and off the ice, a very disciplined team. And then, naturally, the winning will come as a byproduct of that."

General manager Steve Tambellini said he was impressed by Krueger's work on the Oilers' power play last season -- taking it from 27th to third in the league -- and his transformation of the Swiss hockey program. Under Krueger, the Swiss rose from 15th to seventh in the world rankings and posted a 2-0 win over Team Canada at the 2006 Turin Games.

"For hockey that was an incredible moment, but I know why that happened," said Tambellini. "When you speak to the people that work with Ralph, when you speak to the players who have played with him, they talk about leadership, they talk about clarity, they talk about motivation."
