Nexus Q starts shipping in earnest from Google Play, social streaming reaches our doors in five days

Nexus Q review - cables

The Nexus Q media streamer might not have generated the same kind of mania as the Nexus 7 tablet, but it's still good news that Google is now shipping its mysteriously social orb. Google Play has the Q in stock and expects new US orders to arrive on doorsteps within the next three to five days. We're not expecting the kind of runaway sales of the $299 hub that have made the more utilitarian Nexus 7 hard to find, but anyone who spends a lot of their leisure time in the Google media ecosystem might appreciate the integration. Alas, that made-in-the-USA design still isn't available outside of the USA, so those in other countries will have to make do with alternatives.

An Unlikely Friendship, 60 Years Apart | Psychology Today

Chandran and Erin, and family, at graduation

Erin Knauer and Chandran Kaimal participated in the Digital Life History Project at Colgate University. Here is Erin's moving account of the strong inter?generational and cross?cultural friendship that emerged from this project, and Chandran's response. You can see the digital story they made together (honoring Chandran's immigrant experiences) here.

Dear Meika,

When I first met Chandran, I saw a kind little old man, who seemed a bit shy and willing but embarrassed to open up to me. He couldn't really fathom why I was interested in hearing his story. During graduation he touched on this, saying that he had resigned/expected no surprises to come in his old age, that he would not develop such a close relationship since he had formed them all when younger. And this ended up not being the case with our close friendship, which has broadened to include my family.

Our first conversation consisted of a broad overview of his life, and the more I learned, the more fascinated I was. I think the real reason behind this is that I am the daughter of a Colombian immigrant who came to this country with nothing, and eventually, with hard work, made something of herself? a rags to riches kind of story. So I felt we immediately had this base connection, something by which he could understand me, in terms of my identity, (cultural), much better then anyone else I know.

I've listened to all my mom's stories my entire life (occasionally unwillingly), and I love them. Chandran's stories were very similar in many regards. He told me about his continuous struggles to assimilate, the sacrifice of leaving your family behind for your own prosperity/path, and about his close bond to his children and what he carried from his culture and traditions to them.

From the first session, we talked for hours, finding more similarities in his and my Mother's stories, comparing their experiences living the American life/dream, and how they raised their children. He could truly understand my perspective on things, my sense of belonging to no place or culture, calling three separate countries home, feeling like an outsider amongst 'my own' people, and he could see how that lead me to study anthropology.

The more I talked with him, the more I wanted to see him and spend time with him, since he was an escape from school and gave me guidance. In this way he took on a grandfather role, and he considers me one of his granddaughters. This resulted in a kind of mutual helping and counseling, where he helped me de?stress and begin to believe in myself, and I helped by listening and, on a few occasions, giving him my perspective on something that troubled him. And we usually did all this talking over dinner, which made it even more special and made it feel more like I was coming home when I walked through their door.

In the following semesters we made it a point to meet at least once each time, so we could catch up and he could hear about how I was doing with school. I really wanted him to meet my family, especially my mom, and so the last night I spent at Hamilton before heading home, Chandran and his wife Lorraine invited my parents and I to their house for dinner. My mom and Chandran traded stories over what I had told each about the other, which was quite fun to hear. They also compared their immigrant stories and exchanged perspectives they developed through living as Americans and having families here.

I asked Chandran if he would come to my graduation, for which he most graciously agreed, and so when I came back in May, I came back early and stayed stayed at his house. That gave us a little time to catch up, and in the evening my parents and sister arrived and we enjoyed another wonderful dinner. My sister also hit it off with him and she now corresponds with him, in regards to cooking Indian food. And so our family bond grows!

I look to Chandran as a comforting, kind, and understanding figure who I can talk to about anything. My grandparents died when I was little, so he has replaced/represents them in my eyes. I love the wisdom he imparts so willingly to me, and that fatherly love he has bestowed on me, and I'm so thankful I was lucky enough to receive it.

I hope this answers your questions and please let me know if you have any more. Sorry I made this so long, but I feel this is the least I can write to give an honest description of our relationship. I will keep in touch and let you know how things work out for me. Until then, please continue those life history interviews, because us students need to slow down and listen to the wise from time to time!

Cheers,

Erin

?~

Dear Meika,

Thank you for sending me Erin's thoughtful and affectionate story of our friendship. She has explained very well how our age difference, 60 years, and cultural factors, like my Indian background, worked in our favor. We could find common ground and lots of reasons to like each other. On my part I quickly found I could relate to her as easily as I do with my daughters and granddaughters.

Erin's narrative is direct and unsentimental, but I cannot read it without being struck by her kind portrayal of me. True, I too view her with similar affection. It is amazing we could get there in the short time we had to interact. What we didn't expect was how rapidly the friendship expanded to include Erin's parents, her sister Heather, and my wife, Lorraine.

With best regards,

Chandran

Quick personal development guide - Hero from Zero

Quick personal development guide

Personal development tips are a great way to kickstart your personal growth and to push yourself to new levels of achievement and fulfillment. If you?re someone who?s interested in personal development and personal growth, you?re probably always in search of effective strategies for stimulating growth. You?re probably also looking for strategies which will ensure your personal growth and help you to achieve results.
So after spending over a decade studying personal achievement, I?ve decided to provide these seven easy self improvement tips as a way of giving back and helping people like you to achieve greater success in their life.
Daily Journaling
If you study the great achievers of history, you?ll find that almost all of them were avid writers. Keeping a daily journal helps you to clarify your thoughts and develop a sense of self-awareness which will give you the ability to reinvent yourself on a moment?s notice and help you to develop unshakable self-confidence.
Meditation
This is probably the most commonly neglected of these seven self improvement tips .it?s also one of the most important.

Meditation is the most effective means of reducing stress and clearing out your mind from ?junk thoughts? which lead to worry and anxiety. Daily meditation also helps to slow your heart rate and regulate your digestion among dozens of other health benefits.
It also makes your sleep more restful and helps your body to recover faster. Basically, the practice of meditation is the one thing which can make the other six of these self improvement tips effective.
Expecting to Win
People who achieve great things in life aren?t normally anymore intelligent or capable than the average person. But they do one thing different which many intelligent people have a hard time doing: they expect to win, even before they know how they?re going to do it.
Having expectations doesn?t require knowledge of how those expectations are going to be, and if you start from a foundation of bold expectancy, the rest is just a matter of perseverance.
Writing Goals and Plans of Actions
The habit of writing down clear and specific goals and plans of action for achieving those goals is a must if you want to accomplish anything. This is because writing down your goals clarifies them and begins building an expectation in your mind. Also, having written plans gives you a specific set of actions to take each day towards the realization of your long-term goal.
Be Well Rounded
The process of personal development must be holistic in nature. Every single area of your life affects every other area either directly or indirectly. If your relationships are out of order, it?s going to affect your health and your financial life. If your health is out of order it?s going to start your personal growth and make it more difficult for you to find the energy to achieve any of your goals.
So no matter what you?re trying to achieve, being well-rounded is the key to living a balanced life and for building the physical stamina, the emotional fortitude, the financial security and the social support system required in order to achieve great things.
Positive Affirmations
Positive affirmations have the power to change your inner dialogue which can literally change your personality, your character, your actions and your life. For best results, write one positive affirmation for each of the key areas of your life (health, relationships, finances and career) and make a commitment to rehearsing them out loud twice daily.
Teach to Learn
This is the most important of any of the seven self improvement tips. The more you teach other people the principles of personal growth, the clearer your understanding will be of them and the more effective you?ll be able to make them in your own life. Even if you have no one to teach, you can write about the principles of personal development and how they are helping you.
You can even begin by writing a short paragraph about each of these simple self improvement tips. Write each one as if you were teaching the principles to someone else and your understanding of them will deepen.

Hypertensive Frail and Elderly May Live Longer | dailyRx

Various studies have linked lower blood pressure to increased longevity among adults. That may not hold true for frail and elderly patients. They may actually live longer with higher blood pressure.

Lower blood pressure was still found to offer protection to active adults over the age of 65, the recent study found.

Discuss blood pressure management strategies with your cardiologist.

Michelle Odden, lead author and a public health epidemiologist at Oregon State University, noted that with age, blood vessels tend to lose elasticity and stiffen. She said it may be that high blood pressure provides a mechanism that compensates for that loss by assisting blood pump to the brain and heart.

During the study, researchers examined a group of 2,340 adults over the age of 65. The study used walking speed to determine which participants were considered frail. Participants walked 20 feet at their normal rate, with slower walkers moving 0.8 meters per second.

The faster walkers were considered more robust adults and were less likely to have diabetes, coronary heart disease or heart failure. A third group, or the "frail participants," were unable to complete the walking test, commonly because of an inability to walk that distance.

Researchers found that faster walkers with high blood pressure were at a 35 percent greater risk of dying versus individuals with normal blood pressure.

However, that same link was not found among slower walkers.

Investigators determined that frail participants who were unable to complete the walking test had the opposite results. Those with higher blood pressure were 62 percent less likely to die.

"There is a profound difference in the physiological age of an 80-year-old man who golfs every day, and someone who needs a walker to get around," Odden said. "So in the fast walkers, high blood pressure may be more indicative of underlying disease, not just a symptom of the aging process."

The research is the first to make an association between walking speed, mortality and blood pressure so additional studies will be needed.

The study was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association's Archives of Internal Medicine.

Hypertension (high blood pressure)

It is estimated that close to 30% of the United States population has high blood pressure (hypertension), or about 90 million people. Blood pressure is measured as the force the pumping blood exerts on the walls of the arteries in the body.

When this pressure is higher than normal (120/80 mmHg), patients are at risk for heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, and aneurysms in the arteries and brain. Even moderate high blood pressure can lead to a shortened life expectancy. Most high blood pressure is asymptomatic, and is discovered during a routine checkup.

?

As blood pressure reaches dangerously high levels, some people may experience symptoms such as headache, ringing in the ears, visual changes, and irregular heartbeat. These symptoms are a medical emergency. At particularly high risk for high blood pressure are African Americans, people who are obese, smokers, diabetics, having high salt intake, and having a family history. Alcohol abuse and cocaine use can also cause hypertension.

Diagnosis is made by measuring blood pressure over several doctors visits, and is treated by lifestyle modification first, such as smoking cessation, weight loss, dietary changes, and exercise. There are hundreds of different medications to treat hypertension, such as beta-blockers (Lopressor, Inderal), diuretics (Diamox, HydroDiuril), Calcium channel blockers (Norvasc, Procardia), and ACE inhibitors (Lotensin, Vasotec, Capoten).

Thoughts On Post-Christian Living: Relationships | The Loving Room

A few nights ago my close friend Jay Moore and I were sharing a beverage on a local patio (my Sam Adams Seasonal Lager was delcious, while Jay's glass of red was "really bad") when we got talking about relationships. My memory is pretty terrible these days, so I asked Jay if he would send me an e-mail containing some of the things we had talked about, which he did. Jay and I sing together, as well as having a similar religious history, both growing up within fundamentalist evangelical Christianity. Both of us have left this religion long ago. With Jay's permission, here are some of this thoughts:

Thoughts On Post Christian Living: Relationships

When one has lived a life, since childhood, that has been structured around a religion like conservative Christianity, it becomes difficult and confusing to navigate in the unknown waters of the new territory. The map no longer applies. What does it mean to be good if it isn?t for?God?s sake? Without God, will I sail off the ends of the earth to my moral destruction? And, when it comes to intimate relationships, will I become a blackguard and a fiend, taking advantage? of the innocents I seduce without a care and casting them aside after I've had my way with them?

I think the first problem here is the idea that morality and religion (or faith) are inextricably linked. This is an age old assumption that pervades our history, especially among the ?People of the Book? - Jews, Christians and Muslims. When we are imbued with the concept that God is a father-king-judge deity, so much of how we conceive our relationship to the ultimate relates to how good or bad we are in some arbitrary code from this deity that is instilled in our minds since childhood. Reject the conservative idea of the Biblical God and we will surely turn into amoral hellions, won?t we? It ain?t necessarily so. One of the teachings I was raised with was that believing in ?situational ethics? is part of how Satan undermines the faithful and we should always be on guard against this heresy. ?If ?God is the same yesterday, today and forever,? then how can we pick and choose, with our self-centred, sinful hearts, what we think is right or wrong?? Wake up and smell the coffee. Situational ethics are everywhere, including within conservative Christianity. I won?t take a lot of time here to describe how this is so, other than to say it only takes a short examination of the myriad of Christian denominations and their wide-ranging doctrines about morality and the slow evolution of these doctrines and the eventual acceptance of various behaviours over time (sometimes centuries) for one to grasp the idea that situational ethics pervades Christianity like everywhere else. We are all in a process of growth, lifting our eyes as we mature, to see a wider horizon and face bigger questions. And when we find questions for which we have no black and white answers, then we can learn to accept, first the greys and then, eventually, the unknowns, perhaps the unknowables - the mysteries. How?s that coffee smelling? So what?s this have to do with intimate relationships? Well, if we reject the idea of absolutes in a religious or social or cosmic context, then my implication is there are no absolutes in relationships, either. All relationships are unique. What worked well in the last relationship I had doesn?t work well in this one. What felt right and good in the last relationship doesn?t feel right and good in this one. What questions we had for each other in the last relationship aren?t even close to the questions we have for each other in this one. Every relationship is a whole new ball game and, unfortunately (or fortunately), that means no given rules - no map - no assumptions - no tried and true manoeuvres - no answers. What to do, then? Where do I start? How can I experience closeness and intimacy with anyone ethically? If we have forsaken the conservative Christian roadmap then what do we replace it with? I believe there are principles that can be applied in situations that have their roots in our secular history, that have evolved in many societies independent of whatever religious flavour was present in a particular geographical zone around the planet over the centuries. Religions don?t own ethical social behaviour. Religions don?t own Love. Love can be the basis of ethical relationships but more on love later. I like one of Stephen Covey?s principles here as an example of what I mean: seek first to understand. If I recognize that another person is like me, full of unknowns, scared and with a lot of baggage, then I can help us both by listening and understanding. I can offer a safe place for them to begin to express their needs, sorrows, confusions, struggles. I need to focus on the other person and set my own agenda aside for the moment. Paying attention to my own anxieties about my own baggage will not be helpful. Let that go for the time being. Well, start practising now. Another principle I like is the use of contracts. Contracts between people are clearly spoken agreements about what one person wants from another and what the other is willing to do.? They begin with ?Will you.......?? and are completed with the answer, ?Yes, I will.? or ?No, I won?t.? If I have spent some time ?seeking first to understand,? then asking the question or answering it is done in a context of understanding and respect. ?Will you listen to my story?? ?Will you tell me your story?? ?Will you tell me what you?re feeling? What you?re thinking? What you?re believing?? ?Will you tell me what you want right now??? What you want from me right now?? ?Will you tell me what you like? What you don?t like?? The answer to these questions can either be ?yes? or ?no.? Be prepared for ?no? which could mean ?not yet,? ?not sure? or ?not ever.? But aren?t I supposed to know what they want? Aren?t they supposed to know what I want? Hogwash and malarkey! How can this be possible? Remember - no given rules, no map, no assumptions. Every person is unique and every relationship is a whole new enterprise. Believing that we should be able read another?s mind or that they should be able to read ours causes a huge amount of unnecessary pain and suffering in this world.? We are responsible for telling another person what?s in our minds and we need to recognize and honour that the other has the responsibility to tell us what is in theirs. This is respect - for self and for others. What?s love got to do with it? There are many really interesting and intriguing definitions of love out there: agape, eros, philia, devotion, forever, ordained by heaven, ?love your neighbour as yourself,? ?all you need is love,? ? love me tender? and ?I love my dog.? Quite a spectrum of ideas. I like the references to love as a verb - loving, as in loving action. Feelings, thoughts and beliefs all take place inside me but my behaviour is what I do. It?s observable. It?s what the other sees and hears. So when it comes to ethical, intimate relationships I believe we can act in loving ways, applying ethical and respectful principles that make room for each person to decide to give or receive what they choose. Asking the question, ?Do I love this person??? ?Am I in love with this person?? ?Do I want to live with this person?? might be a rabbit hole you don?t want to go down right away. ?Will I act with care, respect, and honesty - loving action - with this person?? can be a better question to answer. Imagine! Autonomous, free-thinking, responsible adults, free to decide for themselves what they are willing to say or do in any situation and free to act in caring, loving, honest ways with another human being! Wow! What a concept! Yes, but.....yes, but......what about commitment? what about forever? what about.......? I know: what about all this baggage I?m carrying that I?m going to put in my way to trip myself up with? Well, start learning to let it go and start replacing it with new principles, new ethics, and making responsible and respectful adult decisions in the here and now. That?s all we have. Learn what loving behaviour means in your new world beyond your old religion. Behave in loving ways with anyone, here and now, whether it?s the panhandler on the street, your boss, your adversary or the person who invites you into their bed. ?Will I act with care, respect, and honesty - loving action - with this person?? There is much to learn, much to give and much to receive.

Measures to Follow to Achieve a Winterized, Well-protected Home

Detroit winters could be totally extreme, largely due to the area's closeness to the Great Lakes, which implies that your roofing will be fighting a season-long battle against the elements that it's likely to lose without your help. For this reason, it is recommended that you winterize your house, especially your roofing, before freezing weather sets in.

If you do not get your roof ready for winter season, minor issues that already existed in the course of summertime can grow to significant proportions and set off a great deal of damage during the winter. Also bear in mind the simple fact that you're probably going to freeze to death if your roof structure eventually develops a huge, gaping opening. So quit lounging about, familiarize yourself about roofing winterization, and brace your home for the assault of the elements.

Outdoors

An excellent place to begin in getting your house ready for the winter would be the outdoors. The first course of action would be to trim the trees surrounding your property--falling tree limbs are popular reasons for roofing dilemmas. Also, you have to clean off the debris on your rooftop, especially in the rain gutters. Clean rain gutters are extremely crucial when winter comes--they are your primary protection against the formation of ice dams, which unavoidably results in your roof structure falling apart when left unattended.

Indoors

There are a couple of points that you must inspect indoors: moisture and ventilation. Go to the attic and see to it that it is sufficiently ventilated. If it isn't, it may cause moisture and molds to grow in the space and the heat from the home will melt the snow on the roof, generating ice dams. Inspect the walls of the entire home for moisture--it could be a sign that you have a leak.

Home Remedies

Back in 1934, temperatures in Detroit plummeted to an incredible -21?F. If your roof is problematic in the course of this period, it can be too cold to leave the house and search for proficient roofing contractors. If this is the situation, Detroit roofing companies recommend that you research prevalent problems and ways to best correct them using common items such as wooden planks, roofing cement, and buckets.

Professional Assistance

Quick fixes are not supposed to be permanent--so once the weather improves, seek experts in roofing Detroit has to assist you. What you have to find out about roofs is that if they have a problem and you overlook it, that predicament usually becomes worse and worse. You really don't want to learn how much a total roofing replacement will cost you.

Whilst you have a roofing contractor in your home, you may as well discuss with him to check on the siding Detroit homes commonly have, just in case. For additional data on preparing your house for wintertime, visit homerepair.about.com/od/exteriorhomerepair/ss/winterize_8.htm.

This guy shot himself in the penis with a handgun | The Lost Ogle

Yesterday, I stopped by the Braum?s drive-thru for lunch. I ordered my usual: a Number One with cheese, no mayo, no pickles, add ketchup, with an unsweet iced tea. When I got home and checked my order, everything looked correct. The burger came with cheese, it didn?t have any pickles or mayonnaise, and the fries seemed fresh. It was a successful Braum?s visit!

Or so I thought.

After eating a couple of bites of food, I grabbed for my drink, put in the straw, and took a big swig of?sweet tea. Well played, Braum?s, well played. You got my hopes and dreams up with the correct food order only to shatter them by sneaking in a mysterious, chalky-tasting, sugary-based liquid. And you didn?t warn me about it either! There?s nothing worse than the unexpected taste of sweet tea hitting your tastebuds. Well, almost nothing. I guess you could always accidentally shoot your penis with a handgun in South Oklahoma City. That would suck.

From News 9:

Oklahoma City police arrested a 36 year old man after he told investigators he accidentally shot himself in the genitals.

Police were called to Southwest Medical Center on Saturday, July 14, after a man came into the emergency room with a gunshot wound. Police questioned Tavares Donnell Colbert and told them he was on his way to sell a gun when he accidentally shot himself.

According to Colbert, he was on his way to S.E. 44th and Shields when he pulled over to the check the gun. He said he?d had problems with it earlier and wanted to make sure it was functioning properly.

Colbert told police when he tried to force the slide back, he also had his finger on the trigger. The gun went off and he shot himself in the penis. According to the police report, Colbert panicked and drove himself to the hospital.

Police told Colbert because he had prior felony convictions it was illegal for him to own a gun. Colbert said he was aware of that, and that?s why he was trying to sell the weapon. Officers arrested Colbert after he was released from the hospital. He was booked into the Oklahoma County jail on one count of possession of a firearm.

Well, at least he knows the handgun works?right?

Anyway, we generally make fun of stupid criminals on this site, but I think we?re going to take the high road on this one. The guy shot his dick, panicked, and then drove himself to the hospital. That?s impressive! I can?t even operate a car after drinking sweet tea! They should give him a medal for that accomplishment alone, or at least let him keep his gun. I mean handgun. Whatever.

P.s. ? Please don?t leave any giant black cock jokes in the comments. According to Marisa, that myth is totally true, and the last thing we want to do is reinforce and/or promote stereotypical stereotypes that haunt Marisa. Thanks.

EU opens antitrust investigation of Microsoft

(AP) ? The EU's executive body, the European Commission, announced Tuesday that it was opening an investigation into whether Microsoft has kept the antitrust commitments it made in 2009, and warned that penalties for non-compliance would be "severe."

Microsoft conceded it had "fallen short" of meeting its obligation to provide the "browser choice screen," or BCS. The choice screen would allow users of Microsoft's Windows operating systems to select a browser other than Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

"Due to a technical error, we missed delivering the BCS software to PCs that came with the service pack 1 update to Windows 7," Microsoft said in a statement.

The company said that PCs running the original version of Windows 7, as well as Windows XP and Windows Vista, did have the screen.

"While we have taken immediate steps to remedy this problem, we deeply regret that this error occurred and we apologize for it," Microsoft said.

EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia told reporters it appeared that the choice screen, promised by Microsoft in 2009 following an antitrust case, has not been provided since February 2011, meaning 28 million customers who should have seen it may not have.

Microsoft submitted a report to the Commission in December asserting that the browser choice screen was being provided as required. In its statement Tuesday, the company said it believed at the time that was the case.

The company said it had retained outside help to conduct a formal investigation of how the technical error occurred and to make suggestions to avoid such compliance problems in the future.

It also said that it was offering to extend the time during which it is obligated to display the choice screen by an additional 15 months.

"We understand that the Commission will review this matter and determine whether this is an appropriate step for Microsoft to take," the statement said. "We understand that the Commission may decide to impose other sanctions."

Keith Hylton, a law professor at Boston University, said the Commission was overreacting.

"There may be a few people on the planet, living deep in forests on the Marshall Islands, who are not already aware that Microsoft's Internet Explorer is not the only browser available," Hylton said. "Google's reminders about Chrome are hard to escape."

Hylton said that, in the U.S., courts would ask for evidence that consumers had be harmed ? evidence Hylton said he doubted could be found in the Microsoft case. He speculated that the Commission was either protecting domestic competitors or raising revenue.

Anthony Michael Sabino, a professor of business law at St. John's University in New York, said the Commission was entitled to enforce its settlement, but its "unremitting hostility" reflected the difference between U.S. and European antitrust enforcement.

"In the U.S., the law protects competition; in Europe, the antitrust regulators use the law to protect competitors, especially homegrown ones," Sabino said.

Almunia said this would be the first time this type of legally binding agreement with the Commission had not been complied with.

"Needless to say, we take compliance with our decision very seriously," he said. "If the infringement is confirmed, there will be sanctions."

All told, the European Union has so far fined Microsoft ?1.64 billion ($2 billion).

(AP) ? President Barack Obama basked in the glow of the Olympics on Monday, getting a courtside look at LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and other members of USA Basketball.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden took their seats to chants of "U-S-A" at a U.S. men's Olympic basketball exhibition game against Brazil as the loudspeakers blared Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A.," images that any president running for re-election would relish.

"Obviously the talent that we've got at this point is unbelievable," Obama said during a halftime interview on ESPN2. "So there's no reason that we shouldn't bring home the gold. We just have to stay focused."

Obama is an avid basketball fan and the tune-up games before the start of the London Olympics allowed him to wrap himself in the Olympic spirit four months before Election Day. His Republican rival, Mitt Romney, is expected to use the Olympics to highlight his leadership role during the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

Romney, who helped turn around the Salt Lake City Games after they became caught up in a bribery scandal, plans to be in London for the opening ceremonies next week. First lady Michelle Obama will lead the U.S. delegation to the opening ceremonies.

Monday night gave Obama a chance to soak in his favorite sport.

After a quick ride to the Verizon Center from the White House, Obama greeted members of the U.S. women's basketball team on a practice court after their win over Brazil in the first game.

"We could not be prouder," Obama said after hugging Tamika Catchings, Diana Taurasi and other members of the women's team. The women's team presented Obama with a red No. 1 USA jersey and a signed basketball.

Obama, dressed in a blue jacket and jeans, then walked out before a roaring crowd, shook hands with fans and sat down next to former aide Reggie Love, who played basketball for Duke University.

Obama and first lady Michelle Obama even appeared on "Kiss Cam," the in-house video that spotlights kissing couples during a game break. The Obamas wouldn't oblige during the first half, despite roars and some boos from the crowd. But in the fourth quarter, "Kiss Cam" peered back on the first couple and the president was ready: He put his arm around his wife and planted a big kiss on the first lady as the crowd roared.

Some members of the men's team are Obama supporters. A handful of Olympic team members, including Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul, had agreed to participate in a basketball game fundraiser for Obama's campaign last December but the event was canceled because of the resolution of the NBA lockout. The fundraising game has not been rescheduled.

Obama's campaign held a fundraiser last February at the Orlando-area home of Vince Carter of the Dallas Mavericks. Attendees included Paul, who plays point guard for the Los Angeles Clippers, NBA commissioner David Stern and former NBA stars Magic Johnson and Alonzo Mourning.

Basketball has been a longtime passion of Obama's. He played high school basketball in Hawaii and likes to play pickup basketball with friends. He helps coach his daughter Sasha's youth team and keeps close tabs on his hometown Chicago Bulls.

During Veterans Day last year, he was courtside for a game between Michigan State and North Carolina on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson off the coast of San Diego. In March, Obama invited British Prime Minister David Cameron to an opening round game of the NCAA tournament in Ohio.

IRS Bogarts Medical Marijuana Pharmacy's Deductions, Drives Founder Into Bankruptcy

Marijuana Following up on my earlier post:? Forbes: Owner of Nation's First Marijuana Pharmacy Now Broke and Fighting IRS, by Janet Novack:

Lynnette M. Shaw, the colorful pot activist who opened the first licensed medical marijuana dispensary in the United States, is fighting an IRS bill for $1.27 million in back income taxes and penalties and has filed for personal bankruptcy, listing $276,000 in state sales taxes among her debts.

Shaw was forced to shut her Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Fairfax, Ca. late last year, after U.S. Attorney for Northern California Melinda Haag wrote a letter to her landlord threatening to seize the building that housed her operation. The letter was part of a coordinated crackdown by four U.S. Attorneys in California on marijuana dispensaries. ...

Shaw?s personal income tax troubles stem from an IRS decision to deny business expense deductions to marijuana dispensaries under a provision Congress passed in 1982 (? 280E) that disallows deductions for ?trafficking in controlled substances? as ?prohibited by Federal law or the law of any State in which such trade or business is conducted.? Surprisingly, Shaw never incorporated the dispensary?as either a for-profit or not-for-profit corporation. Instead, she ran it as a sole-proprietorship, reporting its $1 million plus in annual sales and all its expenses on Schedule C of her individual 1040 tax return.

Shaw?s previously unreported lawsuit filed in U.S. Tax Court late last month, shows that rather than reporting profits, she reported losses totaling $186,826 in 2008 and 2009. After denying all her expenses for everything from cannabis to utilities, IRS auditors calculated Shaw had taxable income of $2.83 million for those years. This past March it sent her a bill for $1.27 million n back taxes and penalties, plus an as yet uncalculated amount of interest. Shaw says she owes nothing. (Harborside, which is incorporated, has reportedly been hit with a $2.5 million IRS bill; according to the U.S. Tax Court docket, it filed suit challenging the assessment in December.)

Shaw?s suit argues that the IRS is ignoring state laws legalizing medical marijuana as well as a 2007 U.S. Tax Court decision (Californians Helping To Alleviate Medical Problems, Inc.) that was decided largely in favor of another, now closed, marijuana dispensary. In the CHAMP case, the IRS conceded that 280E doesn?t preclude deducting the cost of goods sold (i.e. the cost of the cannabis). The court also ruled that CHAMP could deduct the cost of providing extensive counseling and caregiving services to its members, although not the cost of actually distributing the marijuana.

Price of gas continues to fall, but that may change soon

?

By Jonathan Stempel, Reuters

?Consumers have caught a break from the slowing economy as gasoline prices extended their steep three-month decline, but the cost of filling the tank may soon head back up, a widely followed survey said on Sunday.

The Lundberg Survey said the national average price of self-serve, regular gas was $3.41 on July 13, down from $3.478 on June 22, and from $3.615 a year ago.

That decline was the sixth straight in the survey of 2,500 gas stations, which comes out every other or every third week.

Gasoline prices have fallen 14 percent from a recent peak of $3.967 a gallon set on April 6. The record high is $4.112 set on July 11, 2008.

Trilby Lundberg, who conducts the survey, in an interview said prices may soon enter a period of "comparative stability," reflecting crude oil price trends and the summer driving season.

She added that there is "no strong reason" to expect prices to keep hurtling toward $3 a gallon.

"The retail price may well have bottomed out," Lundberg said. "Crude oil prices turned around during the period, and we are in our seasonal period of higher consumption. Lower prices are also an incentive for consumers to drive more, including to work."

There are countervailing forces that might tend on their own to push prices lower or higher.

The U.S. dollar this month has risen to a two-year high against the euro and a nearly two-year high against a basket of currencies. A rising dollar often causes the price of dollar-denominated commodities such as oil to decline.

On the other hand, the price of U.S. crude, which Lundberg said "dictates more than any other factor what happens to gas prices," has risen nearly 13 percent from its recent trough on June 28, settling Friday at $87.10 per barrel. That price had been as high as $110.55 as recently as March 1.

Gas prices could also rise if Iran follows through on its renewed threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which 40 percent of global sea-borne oil exports passes, in retaliation for Western sanctions on crude exports.

The lowest average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in the 48 contiguous states was $3.00 in Jackson, Mississippi, and the highest price was $3.78 in Chicago, Lundberg said.

Diesel fuel prices also fell in the latest three-week period, dropping to $3.7272 from $3.7783.

Choosing the Right Web Host | Success Internet Business

Choosing the right web host is a very important process that is all to often hurried through or; simply misunderstood.

Choosing a web host is in fact one the most important parts of setting up an online business. You need a service that is fast; easy to use and understand; provides excellent support; and is serious enough about its operations to guarantee that your website will never be down unless the entire datacenter were completely demolished.

Below is a list of the most common questions and answers to consider when looking for a web host. Understanding the different areas of web hosting and services available will help you to make a better educated decision when you do subscribe to a web hosting service.

What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is the process of putting your web site on a web server or web host, so everyone connected to the Internet can see it. If you have a permanent connection to the Internet you could host your web site on your own computer, but that is in general not a good idea. A good web host is a real server in a datacenter with a fast high bandwidth connection to the Internet. And, to make sure you can move your web site to another web host, if necessary, you need a web hosting provider that supports domain hosting.

What is Domain Hosting?

Most Internet Service Providers (or ISP) will give you a free web site when they provide you with access to the Internet. They do this because they don?t want to give you a permanent IP address, which is what you need if you?d like to host a web site on your own computer. Unfortunately, most ISPs don?t support domain hosting with their free web sites. Hence, the URL of your web site is an extension of the URL of your ISP. So what happens when you change ISP? You will have to change the URL and nobody can find you anymore.

The use of a domain name for your web site is absolutely necessary for a professional web site, and to host your own domain you will need to find a real web hosting provider with domain hosting. Many web hosting plans actually include the price of a domain registration, so don?t register your domain before you have chosen your web hosting company.

What is Virtual Hosting?

Virtual hosting is often used as a synonym for shared hosting, e.g. you host your web site on a web server with hundreds of other web sites and you share the IP address with these web sites.

The term virtual hosting should imply, however, that while you share the web server it looks from the outside world that you are the only web site on that server. That means that with virtual hosting you should not only have your own IP address, but also a dedicated bandwidth to the Internet and a dedicated slice of the computers processing power. So, if a web hosting provider uses the term virtual hosting, have a close look if these features are offered before you decide on paying a premium price above standard shared hosting.

What is Bandwidth?

Bandwidth is a measure that reflects how much data can be transferred over a data communication channel.

In web hosting plans the allowed bandwidth generally indicates how much data can be downloaded from your web site per month, and therefore indicates how many web pages and pictures your visitors are allowed to download. If the average amount of page views per visitor is assumed constant, the allowable bandwidth restricts how many visitors you are allowed to have per month.

Just as important, however, is how fast the communication channel between your web host and the Internet is. The amount of data that can be transferred per second is also called the bandwidth of this channel, and this bandwidth is shared by all the web sites hosted by the same provider. If this bandwidth is insufficient, you?ll sometimes notice a slow down in the display of your web pages. In most cases, however, such a slow down is more likely to be caused by an overload on the web server itself.

What is a web server?

A web server is either a special computer or server for reliable hosting of web sites, or the software application that runs on that server. The two main web server applications used by most web hosting providers are

Microsoft?s Internet Information Services (IIS) for windows hosting and Apache for Unix hosting. Both use the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to transfer web pages to your web browser.

What is a datacenter?

A datacenter is building, or part of a building, which offers a professional environment for running computer servers. A datacenter will generally have high speed connections to the Internet and other networks, as well as good security to protect against natural hazards, such as fire, and other hazards, such as intruders and hackers.

Web Hosting Summary.

In summary, what are the important things to look for when selecting a web host?

Price
Datacenter Standards
Easy access to a Control Panel
Easy to navigate Control Panel
24 / 7 Support
Host supports scripting languages / databases required to operate your site
Multiple packages available (As your business grows you may need to upgrade. Make sure the web host provider will allow you to do this)

This is really just the basics; although all very important things to consider. Most web host will have a FAQ file or Knowledgebase file available which you can read through before signing up. In most case cheap is not better; in most cases. However I must say the web host I am now using combines an impressive price with impressive services. Over the years I have used approximately 8 ? 10 different web hosts and HostGator.com is in my opinion one of the best I have ever used. But you can see for yourself here:

http://www.hostgator.com

Also, a big name in the industry that most everyone is familiar with is Yahoo. Yahoo also provides World Class Hosting services for all sizes of business. Yahoo services can be reviewed here:

http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com

Make sure you go through the checklist above while browsing their site and you?ll get a better feel for comparing web host services.

Registering Your Domain? I have always used GoDaddy.com as do many other internet experts I have spoken with. I can safely recommend their service without hesitation.

Good luck and as always feel free to drop me an email if you have any questions concerning this article or most any aspects of starting your own online business.

Best regards,
