Organic ferroelectric molecule shows promise for memory chips, sensors

Jan. 24, 2013 ? At the heart of computing are tiny crystals that transmit and store digital information's ones and zeroes. Today these are hard and brittle materials. But cheap, flexible, nontoxic organic molecules may play a role in the future of hardware.

A team led by the University of Washington in Seattle and the Southeast University in China discovered a molecule that shows promise as an organic alternative to today's silicon-based semiconductors. The findings, published this week in the journal Science, display properties that make it well suited to a wide range of applications in memory, sensing and low-cost energy storage.

"This molecule is quite remarkable, with some of the key properties that are comparable with the most popular inorganic crystals," said co-corresponding author Jiangyu Li, a UW associate professor of mechanical engineering.

The carbon-based material could offer even cheaper ways to store digital information; provide a flexible, nontoxic material for medical sensors that would be implanted in the body; and create a less costly, lighter material to harvest energy from natural vibrations.

The new molecule is a ferroelectric, meaning it is positively charged on one side and negatively charged on the other, where the direction can be flipped by applying an electrical field. Synthetic ferroelectrics are now used in some displays, sensors and memory chips.

In the study the authors pitted their molecule against barium titanate, a long-known ferroelectric material that is a standard for performance. Barium titanate is a ceramic crystal and contains titanium; it has largely been replaced in industrial applications by better-performing but lead-containing alternatives.

The new molecule holds its own against the standard-bearer. It has a natural polarization, a measure of how strongly the molecules align to store information, of 23, compared to 26 for barium titanate. To Li's knowledge this is the best organic ferroelectric discovered to date.

A recent study in Nature announced an organic ferroelectric that works at room temperature. By contrast, this molecule retains its properties up to 153 degrees Celsius (307 degrees F), even higher than for barium titanate.

The new molecule also offers a full bag of electric tricks. Its dielectric constant -- a measure of how well it can store energy -- is more than 10 times higher than for other organic ferroelectrics. And it's also a good piezoelectric, meaning it's efficient at converting movement into electricity, which is useful in sensors.

The new molecule is made from bromine, a natural element isolated from sea salt, mixed with carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen (its full name is diisopropylammonium bromide). Researchers dissolved the elements in water and evaporated the liquid to grow the crystal. Because the molecule contains carbon, it is organic, and pivoting chemical bonds allow it to flex.

The molecule would not replace current inorganic materials, Li said, but it could be used in applications where cost, ease of manufacturing, weight, flexibility and toxicity are important.

Li is working on a number of projects relating to ferroelectricity. Last year he and his graduate student found the first evidence for ferroelectricity in soft animal tissue. He was co-author on a 2011 paper in Science that documents nanometer-scale switching in ferroelectric films, showing how such molecules could be used to store digital information.

"Ferroelectrics are pretty remarkable materials," Li said. "It allows you to manipulate mechanical energy, electrical energy, optics and electromagnetics, all in a single package."

He is working to further characterize this new molecule and explore its combined electric and mechanical properties. He also plans to continue the search for more organic ferroelectrics.

The joint first authors of the new paper are Yuanming Liu, a UW postdoctoral researcher in mechanical engineering, and Da-Wei Fu, a doctoral student working with co-corresponding author Ren-Gen Xiong at Southeast University. Other co-authors are Hong-Ling Cai, Qiong Ye, Wen Zhang and Yi Zhang at Southeast University; Xue-Yuan Chen at the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Gianluca Giovannetti and Massimo Capone at the Italian National Simulation Centre.

The research was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, China's National Natural Science Foundation and the European Research Council.

I started my hosting company 12 years ago and offered clients free online website building with a dead program called WebUMake. It's features are so old that it's an embarrassment.

I need to find an alternative that's very lost cost to me per client as I charge very little for hosting. The pricing for RVSiteBuilder looks good. Can anyone tell me their thoughts on how easy it is to use for extremely inexperienced clients? Any alternatives that you'd recommend? Any advise would be appreciated.

I think that RV SiteBuilder is a viable option. As you said, the costs are relatively low.
As for the user-friendliness, it's just a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get)... it's pretty simple and easy to use, no need for any html / css knowledge.

RV Site is really old. Take a look at newer web builders like Breezi, BaseKit and ScrollKit.

In all honesty, RVSite Builder is a dinosaur and doesn't really provide much of a viable solution for giving customers a web presence they can promote. I can speak from experience, we offer it mainly as a courtesy at this point (because its better than nothing), however I always recommend to clients Joomla/Worpress first as those platforms are more in tune with todays times.

Trendy Site Builder... is good, however my understanding is that all of the designs are flash based? If that's true, probably wont be worth the investment as flash is currently being pushed out of the market (in a hurry it seems like). With that being said, either or would serve as good short term solutions, however I would personally start looking for the next best thing (which at this point, Im not entirely sure I know what that is, but if you find one, please be sure to share it :-)

RVSite Builder allow clients to make a decent site in a few hours, however managing the site using it is quite circumstantial to be honest. We offer it to all our clients as an added value for those with simple needs. Plesk on the other hand is a lot more effective and easy to manage and does feel professional. Another builder which I can recommend is SiteReptile. Although it's not well known it has a good interface and the backend is very user friendly. Best way to tell is to try them out. Good Luck!

We finally dropped RV Sitebuilder since no customer had touched it in about 2 years. There are plenty of more useful alternatives.

Site builder is not being used anymore since almost all users are familiar with designing site already plus there are wordpress, joomla, etc...

Judge must open jury selection in Maine Zumba case

(AP) ? The remaining jury selection must be open to the public in the trial of the first major figure in a prostitution scandal centered on a Zumba studio in Kennebunk, Maine's highest court ruled Thursday.

Remaining members of the jury pool were sent home after the Maine Supreme Judicial Court stopped the process in response to a request by the parent company of The Portland Press Herald. In a 6-1 ruling, the state Supreme Court later ordered the remainder of the process in York County Superior Court to be opened to the public.

No jurors had been seated out of the original pool of about 140.

Mark Strong Sr., 57, of Thomaston, faces 59 misdemeanor counts including conspiring with dance instructor Alexis Wright, who's accused of using her Kennebunk fitness studio as a front for prostitution.

Justice Nancy Mills had been conducting questioning of potential jurors behind closed doors because of potentially embarrassing questions focusing on views on sex acts, pornography and prostitution.

But the high court said that wasn't reason enough to close the proceedings.

"The matter is remanded for the trial court to conduct the remaining voir dire in a presumptively public manner, exercising its considerable discretion to prevent the dissemination of sensitive juror information," Chief Justice Leigh Saufley wrote.

With potential jurors sent home, the judge weighed several pretrial motions, including one asking the judge to dismiss 47 of the counts related to invasion of privacy of accused prostitution clients who were allegedly videotaped without their knowledge.

Defense lawyer Daniel Lilley told the judge that people engaged in criminal activity have no right to privacy under a state law aimed at protecting privacy of people in restrooms, locker rooms and dressing rooms.

"The statute doesn't protect criminals and make criminals victims," Lilley said, telling the judge that the charges would make Maine "the laughingstock of jurisprudence."

Mills didn't immediately rule on the motion.

Responding to other requests, Mills said she'll allow the defense to explore possible bias of an investigator from the Kennebunk Police Department, but won't allow the defense to cast the case as a David versus Goliath scenario with regards to the vast resources used to target Strong, an insurance agent.

Mills also ordered the state to turn over letters that were sent to accused prostitution clients. Lilley contends prosecutors sweetened plea bargains to ensure convictions of 18 men in time for them to testify against Strong.

The married insurance agent has acknowledged having a physical relationship with Wright after helping her launch her Pure Vida fitness studio by co-signing for her lease and loaning money that was repaid with interest. He said he was unaware of any allegations of prostitution, and that he did nothing wrong.

Police said Wright videotaped many of the encounters without her clients' knowledge and kept records suggesting the sex acts generated $150,000 over 18 months.

Wright, for her part, faces 106 counts including prostitution and invasion of privacy for acts performed in her dance studio and in the rented office. She'll be tried at a later date.

Make A Better Home For Your Family With These ... - OK Heyday.com

TIP! If you have a young adult in the house, dressing up their pillows can be simple. Old jeans, concert t-shirts or anything else with cool designs can be cut to size and sewn together to make decorative pillowcases.

Each homeowner is interested in making improvements to his or her home. You will find this article to be full of great advice on that specific need. The more you learn about the process, the easier it will be to make those much-wanted improvements. Read the following article to boost your home improvement skills.

TIP! Peepholes are a great addition for your exterior doors. Before letting anyone in, see who is lurking outside.

Motion detector lights are a good option to consider if you are planning to install exterior lights on your property. Motion sensor lights make your home more secure because they light up when potential criminals enter the property. It also saves you money on your electric bills.

TIP! Are you sick of an old dresser in your bedroom? You can revitalize your old furniture with sandpaper and some new finish. When you take on a refinishing project you can save lots of money and as a result your furnishings will look beautifully renovated.

Installing a shower should probably be a high-priority home improvement project for you if your home doesn?t have one. Not only is a shower more convenient than a tub, but it also more cost effective. Short showers typically use as little as a quarter of the water that it takes to run a bath.

TIP! If you have a window screen that needs to be replaced, and are having trouble finding one that will fit your window, it is not hard to make it yourself. You can use frame kits cut to a specific window size, then attach the screen using an inexpensive tool and cording.

There are new light bulbs far more efficient than the old incandescent ones. Replacing all the old ones with the new is a good idea. Not only do they save you money on your electric bill and help the environment, but they also last longer than regular light bulbs and put off more light. Use modern, energy efficient bulbs instead.

TIP! Important advice that you should not ignore is that you must never hire an unlicensed contractor to do the work on your home improvement project. Certification is required in every state for contractors and sub-contractors.

It is important that your bathroom has proper ventilation. Mold will easily grow in the bathroom because there is a lot of humidity there. Simply repainting over the walls doesn?t destroy the mold. Prevent mold from growing in the first place. Install a ventilation fan or a window to reduce the humidity in the space.

TIP! Install weather stripping on the doors and windows to make your house more energy efficient. Weather stripping can be purchased cheaply at your local hardware store, and is easy to apply.

Are you planning on making some changes to your home? You?re in good company. Millions of people are looking to make home improvements, but many of them don?t have the knowledge. But after reading articles like what you?ve just read above, those tough projects suddenly no longer seem so difficult. We hope you have gained a wealth of knowledge by reading our article. All that?s left now is for you to get started.
