You didn't think this would all just go away, did you? Based on how popular the Ghostbusters 3 news has been over the past couple of years, it really was a no-brainer for the studio to figure out a way to make this happen -- and figure out a way they have. According to Deadline, production is set to begin on Ghostbusters 3 this summer (fingers and toes crossed!), with plans to finally bring the sequel to theaters in 2014 to coincide with the original film's 30th anniversary.
Ivan Reitman will direct, and as of this moment Bill Murray won't be in it. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis will return, and we assume Ernie Hudson will be there too, as well as Sigourney Weaver. Heck, if they can also find some wiggle room for Annie Potts, William Atherton and a surprise return by Rick Moranis, we would welcome them with open arms, hearts and minds (we miss you Rick!).?
As of now, though, from what we've been told this sequel will focus on passing the torch to a younger generation of Ghostbusters, so expect a mix of the original stars and new, younger blood. Some names that have been rumored previously include Bill Hader, John Hodgman, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Stone and more. Etan Cohen recently rewrote the script, and if things stay as is we expect to begin hearing casting news within the next couple of months.
