Anyone who has ever traveled for business, be it for a night or a month, knows that business-related travel expenses can really add up!? As the economy has suffered many businesses are now limiting the amount business travelers can spend per day- be it on food, car rentals or entertainment- and many business travelers complain about going over their allowance, resulting in a lighter wallet for themselves.
But, there are some simple tips and tricks to keep spending on track while traveling for business.
Keep your receipts:? Sometimes business travelers grab a taxi or buy a soda and forget to ask for a receipt- after all, if it?s only a $10 cab ride, or a $2 soda, what?s the difference, right?? The fact is that more and more employers are asking for employees to itemize business expenses and provide receipts, even for what may seem like the smallest items. Why?? Because small items add up!? So, keep your receipts stowed away in your wallet or purse to make sure you?ll get reimbursed for all of your expenditures.
Budget BEFORE you leave:? Make sure that you are aware of your company?s travel policies- what they will and what they will not pay for.? Oftentimes, businesses will put a cap on hotel room stays or meal allowances, and employees don?t know because they do not familiarize themselves with potential restrictions first.? If you review your budget limits before you hit the road, you?ll have a better chance of keeping the money you personally spend to a minimal amount.
Offset costs with no-cost items:? Perhaps your company doesn?t need receipts, but does give you a small overall daily allowance.? The best way to travel on a light budget is to find FREE items.? Take advantage of the free breakfasts or coffee and tea that your hotel or long-term stay home may offer- this will allow you to save some money and budget for other trip expenditures.? ?If you want to find entertainment without spending a dime, take in some of the area?s free attractions like museums, local parks or festivals.
It?s easy to spend, spend, spend while you?re on the road for business but with these simple tips, it?s also easy to budget and even save your company some much needed dollars!
