FLASHBACK: The Church Of Scientology's Child Labor Abuse Exposed

Australia's Channel 7 reporter Brian Seymour did a brilliant expose on the Church of Scientology's long-standing child labor abuse, and their wide-spread deprivation of education to children of staff members. The expose, done in conjunction with an ex-child Sea Org member, exposes children being forced to work over 40 hour weeks and not providing these children with basic education.

Of course Scientology's response to the report was typical. They accused the reporter of being an agent who is working with Anonymous, because of course, no one in their right mind would question a sinister cult which seeks to undermine families, rob people of their money AND their dignity, and violate both moral and legal codes of conduct. Right?

Also, Anonymous will be staging their SIXTH protest this weekend, Saturday, July 12th. Clearly, their efforts are hammering away at the crumbling facade of deception Scientology has precariously built on its web of lies.

Ants farm root aphid clones in subterranean rooms

The yellow meadow ant, Lasius flavus, farms root aphids for sugar (honeydew) and nitrogen (protein). In turn these species of aphids have developed distinctive traits never found in free living species such as the 'trophobiotic organ' to hold honey dew for the ants. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Evolutionary Biology shows that over half of ant mounds contained only one of the three most common species of aphid, and two thirds of these has a single aphid clone. Even in mounds which contained more than one species of aphid 95% of the aphid chambers contained individuals of a single clone.

Aphid farming by ants is considered to be mutualistic. The ants cultivate and protect the aphids which in turn provide food for the ants. In farming mutualism, monocultures may reduce competition and are perhaps the result of husbandry (caused by the ants selecting the best aphids for their needs).

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen, University of Groningen and Rockefeller University used DNA microsatellite analysis to look at the genetic similarity of the three most common species of root aphids (Geoica utricularia, Tetraneura ulmi, and Forda marginata) within L. flavus nests, soil samples within nests, and single aphid chambers.

Results indicated that while there was considerable aphid diversity within the 7 km test site at all sampling levels (ant mound, soil sample and chamber), monocultures occurred more frequently than expected. 52% of mounds and 99% of aphid chambers contained a single species and 60% of these contained a single clone. When multiple species or clones existed in the same mound they were kept separated.

Aniek Ivens, who led this research, explained, "Although two years later most ant mounds seemed to contain the same clones, two mounds had gained new clones of their species. It is possible that either these aphids have been brought in or that they were previously at a very low level in the mound and missed during an earlier survey."

The combination of underground nesting, aphid clones, and very low gene flow between aphid populations has allowed L. flavus to evolve an unusual form of symbiosis. Miss Ivens continued, "In a parallel with human farming methods this most likely gives colonies the possibility to actively manage the diversity and abundance of their livestock - allowing maximal honeydew yield from mature aphids that are kept under optimal conditions of phloem feeding and ant care. Ants also secure dietary protein by eating the excess of young aphids, and replacement of their honeydew-producing livestock when adult aphids become less productive."

Oil falls below $87 as Iran tensions simmer

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Oil prices fell to below $87 a barrel Wednesday in Asia, giving back some of the big gain from the previous day amid growing tension between Iran and Western powers.

Benchmark oil for August delivery was down 99 cents at $86.67 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude for August delivery was down 98 cents at $99.70 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

The contract jumped $3.91 to close at $87.66 in New York on Tuesday after Iran said it test-fired several ballistic missiles in war games exercises.

The acting commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard told state TV that the tests were a response to the refusal by Israel and the U.S. to rule out military strikes to stop Iran's nuclear program.

A European Union ban on Iranian oil came into full effect July 1, and analysts expect the sanctions to cut the crude exports of Iran, OPEC's second-largest producer.

The U.S. military has recently doubled the number of minesweepers in the region, giving it greater flexibility to counter any Iranian effort to mine the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, where about a fifth of the world's oil supply passes.

The latest U.S. supply data suggest demand may be improving. The American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday that crude inventories fell 3 million barrels last week while analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., had predicted a drop of 2 million barrels.

Inventories of gasoline fell 1.4 million barrels last week, the API said.

The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reports its weekly supply data Thursday.

Trading volume was light because markets in the U.S. were open for only a half-day Tuesday and will be closed Wednesday for the Independence Day holiday.

Crude has jumped from $77 last week amid optimism that European leaders are making progress toward stabilizing the region's debt and economic crisis. Investors have brushed off recent signs that the global economy is slowing and fueled a rally in stocks and commodities so far this week.

"While markets have reacted favorably to the news following the EU leaders summit, a definitive resolution to the problems in Europe is still a long way off," National Australia Bank said in a report. "The global growth outlook has started to look a little shakier following a recent run of sluggish economic indicators."

In other energy trading, heating oil was down 3 cents at $2.73 per gallon while gasoline futures fell 2 cents at $2.70 per gallon. Natural gas gained 1 cent at $2.91 per 1,000 cubic feet.
